Jake Whittaker is heading across the ditch to perform for the very first time, and for the Brisbane country singer, it feels like a homecoming. With family roots firmly planted in Taranaki, Jake grew up travelling back to New Zealand regularly with his family, and the country has always held a special pull on him. That feeling inspired one of his own songs, “Coming Home”.
Jake is finally taking his high-energy show to Kiwi audiences and he couldn’t be more fired up. Jake will play his debut New Zealand dates at The Tuning Fork in Auckland on Friday, January 30, followed by a hometown performance at Summer Nights in Stratford on January 31. With his dad’s hometown of Eltham just ten minutes down the road, it’s as close to a hometown show as a tour can get.
“This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Jake said. “I go back all the time, and I’ve always loved New Zealand. To finally play my own shows there means a lot.”
Fans can expect the full Jake Whittaker experience: a high-energy country party that has become his trademark. Local support acts will join the bill, giving the shows a strong community feel, and Jake says he’s more than ready to bring a little Australian flavour to the stage.
“Country’s coming to town,” he said. “If we need to bring shoeys across the ditch, we will.”
For Jake, these shows are the start of something he hopes becomes a regular trip.
“I’d love to get back to New Zealand every year if possible,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to finally sharing my music there.”
