Vera Blue Shares New Video For Single ‘Private’
Whilst settling into her live shows at SXSW and preparing for her debut North American tour, Vera Blue has today unveiled the haunting video for single ‘Private’, the first taste of her upcoming debut album set to be released in 2017 on Island Records/UMA.
The video is directed by award winning Bryn Chainey, a British-Australian director and screenwriter based in Sydney who is best known for his narrative short films that have screened in over 150 festivals including Berlin, Palm Springs and Edinburgh.
Chainey says about the video, “Private” really struck me on first listen: it has a haunting and manic quality, like a fever dream, with lyrics so full of longing that they almost tip over into obsession ….. With the video I wanted to riff on those sensations in a way which also captured the seductive quality of the song along with its brute force; we also wanted to find a way to visually bring together the gothic and modern textures of the song. The clip should be taken as a supernatural love story, in which a lovelorn spectre – Vera Blue – claims her lover and brings him to be with her on the Other Side. Sure, she leads him to his death but, as the chorus goes, “I just wanna make you feel good.”
Shot by cinematographer Dan Ax, the ‘Private’ video stars Sydney dancer Alex Warren from the upcoming Limitless Dance Company production SEVEN and was filmed at over a series of locations in Sydney including the heritage-listed Camelot House in Kirkham, Camden, built in 1888 and used in the Baz Lurhman film Australia. The art direction was led by Sofi Leighton who sourced authentic Victorian-era props and outfits along with choice pieces from contemporary designers including Sass & Bide and Zimmermann.
‘Private’, produced by Andy and Thom Mak, is supported by an Australian national single tour with Melbourne and Sydney shows now SOLD OUT. Limited tickets are still available for Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane.
