Amy Shark – Weekends (Single Review)
While still only a new kid on the Aussie music block, Amy Shark’s already made waves with 2016 Hottest 100 runner-up and Platinum single Adore. Now the Gold Coast songstress is following up with the fresh track Weekends.
Weekends is three minutes of spacey vocals driven by a sustained guitar riff syncopated against percussive echoes, a unique sound Shark first claimed ownership of with Spits on Girls in 2014. Lyrically, Weekends feels like a sequel to Adore— it unleashes the emotional id, exposing the possessiveness and desperation of raw love that is both refreshing and deliciously honest. Shark herself described the song as an “extremely personal, controversial song that’s disguised as this big, happy pop song” just before the single premiered on Triple J the day before its official release.
If combining confronting lyric with ethereal musical vibes is what gave Adore its edge, expect Weekends to be a hit. Once again, Shark has proven herself as one of Australia’s finest up-and-coming artists.
Weekends comes out on ’s Adore tour premiere date, Friday 17th March. The sold-out tour will feature tracks from Shark’s EP, which will drop later in the year.
