Nearly two decades on from their cult indie-dance album Thirteen heating up dancefloors and house parties around the world, Nick Littlemore (PNAU, Empire of the Sun) and Ladyhawke have reunited to drop their much-anticipated sophomore release, Fourteen, alongside a fittingly punchy electro acid-groove track, ‘Getting Tough’.
True to form, the songs that make up Fourteen, like ‘A.A.’, ‘Sail The Seas’, ‘Love Is You’ and ‘Getting Tough’, have their own unique sound and story, but are all distinctly Teenager, expertly combining euphoric synths, pulsing basslines and lush soundscapes, mixed in with electronic rock and catchy hooks, creating a cinematic intensity and immersive experience like no other.
Littlemore and Ladyhawke’s chemistry is undeniable and this collection of songs not only showcases an incredible 20 years of sonic evolution and experimentation, but ushers in a new era for the band, with more collaborations to come.
On reuniting with Ladyhawke to release Fourteen, Nick Littlemore says “This collection of songs was built some many years after the initial LP, entitled Thirteen, that came out on the cult label TIMBERYARD records. Recorded in LA, Sydney, London and San Antonio from 2003 until 2025, Fourteen showcases unique collaborations with original members Ladyhawke and Donnie Sloan, as well as members of PNAU, Peter Mayes and Sam LaMore, and the rarest of gems Ivy Rose from the label LAB78, and lastly, our favourite Sydney children’s choir. Thank you so much for listening and supporting our journey.”
On the story behind Fourteen’s focus track, ‘Getting Tough’, Littlemore adds “Getting tough started its life as a toy death influenced beat with Sam Lamore. It then went through a myriad of changes but always maintained the essence of that 8bit philosophy. Ladyhawke once lived here in Los Angeles and we would work at my studio in WeHo. It was an overgrown setup inside a small shed in the back of my garden. At some point, around the 15th version of this tune, we contacted a kid’s choir and had them record remotely. We’ve always loved adding kids to records, it brings a fire to the track that is unmatched. We love chants and I’ve always written vocal parts imagining that I’m in a crowd at a sport match. I’ve never been much of a sport fan but always loved the chorus of voices proudly and loudly belting out a melody over what became an acid groove.”
Teenager was formed in 2004 by Nick Littlemore (PNAU and Empire of the Sun) and featured the then emerging talent of Kiwi, Pip Brown, who later became known globally as Ladyhawke.
The band released their debut album, Thirteen, in 2006, which was characterised by a blend of danceable beats and punk rock influences. Recorded across studios in Sydney, London, New York, Paris and Los Angeles, the album featured hits like ‘Pony’ and ‘Bound and Gagged’, which showcased their unique and energetic style. Partly due to Nick Littlemore’s DIY ethos as well as its collaborators from Sonic Youth, Van She, Luke Steele, The Birthday Party and The Presets, the album found cult status in the UK, US and Australia.
Despite their promising start, the band was short-lived by their own preeminent success. By 2007, Pip Brown was focussed on her solo career as Ladyhawke, releasing her debut self-titled album in 2008, boasting synth and electro-pop classic gems like ‘My Delirium’ & ‘Paris Is Burning’. Similarly, Nick Littlemore returned to his work with PNAU, and soon after formed Empire of the Sun with Luke Steele, through which his distinctive artistic vision produced globally renowned genre-defying songs like Empire of the Sun’s ‘Walking On A Dream’, ‘We Are The People’ and ‘Alive’ as well as PNAU’s ‘Go Bang’, Elton John & Dua Lipa’s ‘Cold Heart’ (PNAU remix) and Troye Sivan’s ‘You Know What I Need’.
Amidst this creative outpouring, the bond between the pair never waned and they continued to collaborate, writing and recording songs between projects and at times from opposite sides of the world, meaning that this long-awaited new collection of songs is almost two decades in the making.
However, Teenager are not simply picking up where they left off – they’re charting an entirely new course through a dream-like blend of euphoric synths and pulsing basslines via a string of undeniably catchy songs including ‘A.A.’, ‘Sail The Seas’, ‘Love Is You’ and ‘Getting Tough’ which are all featured on their much anticipated sophomore release, Fourteen, out now via etcetc.
