Bringing their distinctive synth-pop glisten to an iconic rock classic, Brisbane indie-pop outfit Action Slacks are paying homage to one of their hometown’s most influential bands with a mesmerising rendition of Powderfinger’s ‘Waiting For The Sun’ (which came out November 12).
Amid a huge year for the prevalent pop pack, which saw the eagerly-awaited release of debut EP ‘Voids’, Action Slacks are continuing to play to their strengths, delivering sparkling soundscapes drenched in luminous synths and nostalgic dancefloor influences.
Now, we find Action Slacks adding their lush, dreamy energy to Powderfinger track ‘Waiting For The Sun’ from their renowned album ‘Odyssey Number Five’, which celebrated its 20 year anniversary last year.

In a cascade of lucid synths and crystalized female lead vocals, the Action Slacks ‘Waiting For The Sun’ cover drips with energising early 2000’s rock sentiments combined with 80’s pop influences that call for a multi-coloured dancefloor or poignant movie montage. Moving at a considered, well-crafted pace, hypnotic synth-pad layers travel towards the chorus, which blooms with dramatic drums and voluminous vocal stacks.
Keeping the optimistic melancholy of the track alive whilst bringing their ethereally fresh take, Action Slacks were able to aptly re-energise the song’s bittersweet sentiment of a new millennium, which remains just as relevant today as we look forward with hope during a time of great unrest in the world. Action Slacks further explain why they chose to cover this particular song: “When we initially had the idea to record a cover, we thought it would only be fitting to pay homage to one of the most quintessential Brisbane bands; Powderfinger. While ‘Waiting For The Sun’ may not be as widespread as some of their bigger singles, it really captures everything great about the band. We started to get a feel for the direction we could take our version, bringing lush synth pads and vocal stacks to a rock classic, and we’re thrilled with how it turned out.”
