Amaya Laucirica returns with The Blue Hour, a breathtaking new album that captures the liminal space between darkness and light, reflection and renewal. Independently released via her own label Pink Frost Records, The Blue Hour is Laucirica’s most dynamic and intimate work yet, blending orchestral arrangements, electronic textures, and luminous pop sensibilities. Produced by James Cecil (Architecture in Helsinki), the album draws influence from artists like Kate Bush, Kylie Minogue, Serge Gainsbourg, and Portishead, revealing a sonic landscape as rich and complex as its themes.

Written over several years, The Blue Hour reflects a profound transformation for Laucirica. Spanning her daughter’s birth and midlife experience, the album explores themes of love, change, and personal evolution.

The album opens with ‘What I Cannot See’, a meditation on feeling lost in a relationship and the world, contemplating the power of ignorance and avoidance. This reflective tone continues with ‘When I’m With You’, a moody, cinematic piece inspired by Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto that tells the story of a suffocating relationship.

‘Here I Am’ directly addresses the disorienting shift into motherhood, voicing the struggle to balance selfhood with newfound responsibilities.

Themes of love and resilience emerge in ‘Now or Never’, reflecting the challenges of long-term relationships and the fear of the unknown. Similarly, ‘Road to Us’ examines how a couple’s identity shifts after significant life changes, such as settling down and raising a child.

A bold shift in tone arrives with ‘Time It Takes’, a dance-inflected departure described by Crush Cop as “a track that lands somewhere between vintage Kylie and Broadcast on a disco bender”. This playfulness contrasts with ‘Tumbling Light’, a poignant tribute to a musician Laucirica once knew, capturing the beauty and tragedy of their life.

The album reaches an emotional pinnacle with ‘On the Edge’, which juxtaposes the joy of birth with the sorrow of loss, marking the cyclical nature of life itself. Closing the journey is ‘Fallen Night’, a tender lullaby about artistic self-discovery, making peace with past mistakes, and embracing love.

More than ever, Laucirica’s voice is front and centre, delivering lyrics that wrestle with uncertainty while embracing hope. As she puts it, “It’s my middle-aged coming-of-age.”
