Cloning are a four piece West Australian band whose music blends elements of rock, pop, shoe gaze and trip hop. Members Felix Parker (vocals/guitar), Nic Rollo (synth/bass guitar), Jack Brett (drums) and Bevan Green (guitar) spent 2018 in the studio and have enjoyed a promising start to 2019, with a WAM Song of the Year nomination for latest single “Epilogues”.

“Special” was the first offering from the band’s debut EP Pillars of Salt and received support from community radio around Australia. This was celebrated with a successful launch show at Mojos.  Originally pegged to be part of their second EP, Cloning decided to release “Epilogues” as a single once word came in of its WAM nomination.

Lead singer Felix Parker breaks down the meaning behind latest single “Epilogues”.“Lyrically, the song revolves around accountability and taking responsibility for actions. I was making some big decisions in my life while writing ‘Epilogues’, like committing to pursuing music full-time. Realising why you are in a certain predicament is like reading your own epilogue, and I think that can be a really positive thing”.  

Of his writing style Parker elaborates further “lyrically, [with ‘Epilogues’], I started using imagery more than matter of fact narrative to tell a story. I think I was drawing from some of my childhood influences like Nick Cave and Augie March, who I’ve always admired for their lyrics and how vividly they create scenes with them.”

Recorded in Blackbird Studios with Dave Parkin (who also engineered the EP), “Epilogues” went through many different versions, with countless parts and arrangements written and then abandoned in-between the first version they wrote and hitting the studio. Parker, who wrote the chords and vocals about a year before recording admits it took a long time to figure out how to approach instrumentation and the single almost didn’t make the cut.  Here Brett explains;

“When we went into the studio to record we thought about scrapping the song. But Nic and Felix always believed in it. Nic put some production hours into the song when we first arrived in the studio and this helped make the chorus lift more”. Parker agrees, “eventually it came together and became one of our favourite songs, so we’re really glad we stuck with it.”

Of the recording process, guitarist Bevan Green reflects, “We wanted to use some electronic sounds for the drums but still have them played by a real drummer on a drum kit. This took the longest for us to figure out but that is pretty normal with our recordings. The drums usually take the longest because we find it hard to record anything else until they sound just how we want them”.  For bassist Nic Rollo this was the first time he stepped away from the synth and to record the bass line.

The band’s forthcoming EP is a reflection of each member’s varied musical backgrounds and draws from many different influences.  Cloning developed their live sound supporting big names like Ocean Alley, End of Fashion and Stonefield. In 2019 the group continue to bring their music to live audiences, with Eastern states shows and a WA regional tour to come in the latter half of the year.

‘Epilogues’ will be released on August 23 and EP Pillars of Salt on September 4.
