“Do I make you uncomfortable?”

It has been a long time coming, but respected Brisbane artist and industry legend Deb Suckling is set to take the wraps off her fist solo offering – new single “Awkward”.

A swirling, quirky, unpredictable slice of angular guitar rock the new tune is the first take from forthcoming album Worthy and pays homage to the in-you-face music that inspired her all those years ago growing up in regional Queensland.

“Awkward for me is about finally finding a voice to speak up with,” Deb explains. “No matter how far we have come, telling the truth seriously makes people uncomfortable and that absolutely shouldn’t be the case. Either way, I’m at that stage that I am not pulling my punches anymore.”

Deb has released a host of records over the years, most notably with the bands Brindle and Lucy Star Satellite. But she is equally well known for powerful music projects including The Soldier’s Wife, You Can’t Take Me and the Big Sky Girls mentoring program.

Awkward was recorded with friend and collaborator Jeff Lovejoy and mastered by Paul Blakey. Deb is also less than keen to talk about herself, leaving some final words to mentor, friend and fellow artist Sean Sennett.

“In 2021 Deb Suckling is standing where she was always meant to be … Centre stage. That’s where she belongs. With a powerhouse voice and a swag of new songs, Deb has the courage to lay her soul bare and sing her truth.

“I’ve known Deb through her various bands Lucy Star Satellite and Brindle, but this journey as a solo artist sees her dragging her art into the ‘now’ and it has been damn exciting to witness her evolution. The new songs are primal and confronting. They do what good art should do – they provoke a reaction, they make you think.

“This woman has soul. She has lived a life. She has scars to prove it. and now – Deb is right where she should be – creating a noise and inviting us to listen. More power you Deb.”

“Awkward” will be release on all platforms July 30 with a run of shows to be announced soon.

Deb also is very grateful for the support of Arts Queensland for funding support of the forthcoming album.

“AWKWARD” is out July 30
