PRESS

“Sounding like a collision between early Split Enz and Models with a bit of the wry acerbic rattle of The Undertones or Wreckless Eric.” Backseat Mafia on ‘Tunnel of Vision’

“‘Super Role Model’ is a scuzzy, fuzzed-out swagger, with a bass line that sounds like it’s looking for a fight. The drums have a slacker feel, but aggressively so, and the panned, delayed guitar adds plenty of eerie menace to the track. It’s the vocals, with hardly any effort, that give ‘Super Role Model’ the who-gives-a-fuck vibe.” The Point Music News

“There is an archetypal Australian laconic approach to a music style that is angular and sharp – think early Models, with the delivery of the Fall’s Mark E Smith. Cold, robotic and very, very enigmatic.” Backseat Mafia on ‘Super Role Model’

“…sonically Super Role Model sees oWo reach for their record collection and produce a combination of fuzz-laden stoner grunge, quiet/loud post-hardcore and good indie-rock.” Sun 13

“oWo unleash an anarchic chaotic front, teetering on the brink of an explosion, restrained by the pounding rhythm section: it is visceral and exciting stuff that has an antipodean genesis from bands like Hunters and Collectors and The Birthday Party and, more recently, Infinity Broke as well as other bands like the Mars Volta and The Fall.” Backseat Mafia on ‘Exit Plan’

Following their 2022 album Super Role Model, Sydney trio oWo release the second single from their new EP Tunnel of Vision, out April 19th.

Following the trap of narrow-mindedness that is examined on the title-track single, oWo double-down on ‘Built’, a song that rails against the inability of people to see outside their own perspective. Over a Krist Novaselic-styled bass line the band work up a robotic mantra, interspersed with descending guitars before charging riffs hurtle into the chorus.

As the band explain, “If you can’t look beyond your own perspective, nothing will get done. Like anyone who has tried to make anything – from music to housing – if we can’t find common ground, then the whole thing gets paralysed with disagreement and eventually collapses.”

oWo continue to refine their angular shapes, riffs and, rhythms right across their new EP. As a trio, the band is more than the sum of its parts, post-punk, alternative rock and melodic indie rock sounds into a shapeshifting, concise and compelling slice of underground Australian rock music.

‘Built’ is out April 4th digitally via Bandcamp, streaming services and Amrap for our community friends across Australia.

The new EP Tunnel of Vision finds oWo digging deeper into some of the themes they explored on their debut album Super Role Model. The state of modern society and the way we navigate its complexities and pitfalls, alongside ideas for potentially remedying its failings.

The first single ‘Tunnel of Vision’, premiered by Backseat Mafia and The Band Next Door on 2SER, leaps out of the speakers with chiming, clarion call guitar notes before stripping back the layers to reveal barked dispatch vocals and Dennis Leung’s taut bass line. The real payoff comes with the chorus that employs an all-in, sing-song melody before Justin Lucas’s rapid fire drums accentuate the song’s title and mission statement.

‘Collective Bargain’ stresses the strength of ‘power in numbers’, over swinging and slashing Mudhoney-influenced guitar chords that march forth like a grass-roots rebellion, while on the EP closer ‘What You Get’ there’s an initial Killing Joke vibe that gives way to a combo of No Wave funk and grungy drive and distortion. It’s an anthemic ode to the dangers of the self-serving mentality.

“These four songs came together quite quickly after the release of our album,” explains guitarist (and one of the band’s three singers) Chris Wilson. “They are born out of the anxieties, delusions and fears of the last little while. There’s this myth of unlimited freedom that seems to be under most things these days, but it’s something that traps us all in a cage of convenience.”

Capturing the band’s raw and vital sound was the job of Frenzal Rhomb’s Jay Whalley, at his Pet Food Factory studio in Marrickville. “He is someone we had been wanting work with for a while but could never make it happen for various reasons. The studio was much smaller than other rooms we have used, and the approach was a lot more direct. With no separate control room it meant there was no physical barrier between band and engineer.”

“We also had less time than with previous recordings, so there was more urgency,” explains Wilson. “That might sound like more pressure to get everything right, but it just meant that we had less time to overthink things. Jay’s approach is very direct and pure which meant we got the tracks down reasonably quickly. His musicality was a great resource, giving us tips on vocal lines, guitar sounds and even laying down some percussion as well.”
