The daydream duality
of experimental indie-jazz, solo-artist,
Ms.D
in her second release
‘DUSTY’

Sydney-based songster, Ms.D, (a.k.a Renee Desreaux) is no newcomer to the music scene, having started out as front-woman for a ska/reggae, indie-rock band called Delphine Geoff. Now in her second release as a solo artist, she’s flipped her game with a sound that’s nothing short of mesmerising, mixing an intoxicating concoction of sultry vocals, dense lo-fi harmonies and jazz-guitar driven beats. The sonic alchemy might be at its most potent yet in the aural elixir that is her fresh new single, Dusty.

Ms.D discovered her innate musicality after being given her first acoustic guitar when she was just 7 years old and getting some lessons. However, she soon realised that her approach to music was more of an intuitive and relationally-driven process.

“Lessons weren’t really for me. Always thought it was boring learning songs I didn’t want to learn. I met some amazing people and then started learning songs at home on Ultimate Guitar Tabs. Once I learnt shapes of chords and what sounded good I began to write my own songs. Threw my poetry on some chords and bam – songs started to flow.”

It wasn’t long before she found herself swept up in the creative vortex that is guitars, bands and making music. She talks about her world opening up after moving schools to Newtown Performing Arts where she instantly clicked with other up-and-coming artists.

Her keen instincts didn’t go unnoticed by her peers and she soon set out to make her mark on Sydney’s vibrant experimental music scene. Eventually throwing herself in head first as the lead vocalist of Delphine Geoff, a band that received rave reviews along with a widespread and enthusiastic following. It is from these origins, fine-tuned and decorated by an amalgam of musical influences – including Nai Palm, Jaala, Velvet Bloom and Amy Winehouse – that this maven of groove has emerged.

Ms.D tells us about what happened next: “After Delphine, I was still cruising off the rails for a bit and excreted all my thoughts into some fresh music that was all me. That’s when Ms.D started. I began playing some tunes with my magical friend, Jacob Grey. We played at wine bars and also as a duo at the Robin Hood Hotel with some other bands. Then I linked up with Pharmercy who taught me some Ableton tricks, and who then introduced me to the brilliant, Daniel Natoli, at Kiln Studios in St. Peters. Then came Puppy. Then came Dusty. And here we are.”

Dusty is the lullaby of a siren that overtakes your will, pulling you in no matter how hard you try to fight its seduction. A sharp rhythmic beat with a visceral bite drops and a smouldering voice wafts in, enveloping the listener with its effortlessness and soulful-elasticity.

She describes it as a “sunset vibe song to make you feel gone or checked out, as if in a daydream; to feel fine or content; to be ok but just okay, not more; and then to just be fine. It’s a step up from Puppy, an introduction to the daydream duality of Ms.D.”

Once it’s got you there’s no going back as you sway involuntarily to the groove and are instantaneously teleported to a dreamier plane of existence. Lulled into her atmospherics of chill, you float through a hypnotic haze, inhaling the swooning melody.

The experience is only intensified by the metaphorical passage through which Dusty takes you, evoking a labyrinth of sentimental complexity to be deciphered, with lyrics like:

Dusty shades of eye-shaped size size

What if I couldn’t tell the time

Ms.D sets the scene, “Dusty started as a string of words: ‘Dusty shades of eye-shaped size’. Something I thought of when attempting to do eye make-up. How we try to mimic nature to create synthetic beauty. Then came the chords when I was fiddling around on the guitar after listening to Jaala for a solid week. And out came the lyrics.”

The song starts off carefree and bright, effortlessly lulling us under its spell and having been carried away it drops us deeper with a hypnotic key change. Suddenly, the whole mood shifts alluding to a complex inner moodscape.

I collapsed within your exhale

I feel gone, I feel fine, I feel ok and I feel alright

“I wrote Dusty during my last relationship. I was happy but I needed more. I knew it wasn’t going to work out long term so I stayed until I couldn’t. The words ‘I collapsed within your exhale’ are the beginning and end of the relationship. The initial collapse of falling in love and the final exhale of having enough.”

Dusty is set to release tomorrow across all streaming platforms. For a sneak peak click the link below. We definitely recommend that you do!
