talk mental health
on latest indie-country tune
‘MONEY ON ME’

Following the wake of the Hobart COVID lockdown, indie band Lennon Wells have released their new single “Money On Me” in anticipation of their debut EP due out later this year. Instrumentally, the tune is nothing short of a super catchy indie-country banger that nearly disguises the raw and often sombre lyricism of frontman Ben Wells in his depiction of mental illness.
The track was recorded at The Chapel Studios in Austins Ferry, an old converted chapel on a graveyard that’d been reimagined into a studio located in suburban Hobart. This was with the mixing and production assistance of long time friend and collaborator of the band, Al Campbell. Having previously worked together on many projects over the past 10 years, this union between Campbell and Wells came naturally.

“Money On Me” takes a refreshingly open and vulnerable look into the mindset Ben had been dealing with at the time, a feeling of trying to be far too self reliant to realise that he needed help.” Wells said, “I’d been feeling pretty depressed and Nicki (my partner) had suggested I go talk to a therapist. I’d keep putting it off because I thought I’d be able to pull myself out of the hole, I’ve always been pretty self reliant in that way. That’s where the first line of the song came about ‘I’ve been feeling better, I’ve been feeling a little sane. I’ve been avoiding my therapist, just in case he doesn’t think the same.”
“The song is really about me being in this depression and thinking I’d be fine to beat it myself, pushing my loved ones away and being really self destructive but during all that, Nicki having my back. Every time I’d fail she’d be there to pick me back up… I guess the chorus is my way of saying thank you to her for that.”
Lennon Wells formed in amongst the craziness of COVID in March 2020, with the band originally only starting as three members (Wells, Skinner and Al Campbell) as this was all that was allowed to gather with COVID restrictions. During this time period, Ben broke a four-year creative hiatus and crafted the bones of what would eventually become Lennon Wells. As lockdowns eased, the band grew to include Scott Targett on keys, Matt Doyle on guitar and Dave Lee on bass. With their sound finally beginning to come together, with mixes of both country rock ‘n’ roll and honest indie, the band spent the next eight months in and out of the graveyard studio, piecing together what would become their debut EP.
The end of 2020 saw Lennon Wells play their debut show on Boxing day at the Botanic Gardens with A Swayze & The Ghosts, Chase City, Kudu Joy and Lazer Baby. Three major sold out performances ensued, being a New Years Eve show with The Jungle Giants, The Great Escape Festival, and their debut headline show at Hobart Brew Co. to 300 people. With the release of their new single “Money On Me” just around the corner and their debut EP not far behind, there’s never been a better time to jump on the Lennon Wells train.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
