‘In My Room’ is a rollicking rock song about frustration over people who do not respect other’s boundaries with inspiration drawn from the behavioural patterns of Finlayson’s delinquent cat, Cyril.

“Tight as fk, solid in your face rock and then some. Some more tender moments… ravaged and yet beautifully raw. Theirs is a three-way assault that belts, bloodies and blisters. Beautifully brash.” LIVE REVIEW – REDBACKROCK.COM

“Finlayson has been a massive presence on the Australian hard rock circuit for a number of years and now, with Raising Ravens, has found her niche once more. Dirty old school rock that instantly takes you back to your angst-ridden youth”. HEAVY MAG

BIO

Sydney’s Raising Ravens is a hard-hitting rock project focusing on topics that tend to be swept under the carpet or ignored and touches on subjects relating to worldwide and personally experienced abuses of power and the effects those abuses have on those who are at its mercy.

A new musical project for Australian artist Jess Finlayson, Raising Ravens was conceived in 2020 and kicked off with debut single release ‘Careful What You Wish For’. Raising Ravens continued to grow in intensity with the 3rd single ‘It’s A Trap’ hitting number 1 in the AMRAP Metro Charts in April 2021 and staying in the Top 10 for 4 consecutive weeks, along with being added to playlists around the world including USA, UK, Canada, Egypt & Brazil.

“It’s A Trap” was written as a commentary on the lies we as human beings are fed through the romanticism of the fairy tales and the expectations that are forced, particularly on young women as to the treatment they are expected to endure even when faced with the horrific truth behind domestic violence and intimate partner abuse. Inspiration for the song was drawn from the fable ‘Bluebeard’ which speaks volumes to Jess personally, about how people will turn a blind eye to abuse, even when it has been exposed and can no longer be covered up or hidden and that there is a strong push from society to deny the facts in order to maintain the fantasy that is kept alive by a veneer of convenient lies and deception.

Starting out as the lead guitarist for all female hard-rock renegades, Nitocris followed by the infamous Fyreflyes, Jess has been touring nationally and internationally, writing and recording since the age of 15. Most recently being the founding member, lead singer/guitarist for The Mis-Made who are currently on hiatus, the focus in now on recording a full-length album with long standing producer, Lachlan Mitchell and some of her favourite musicians and co- conspirators, Lara Chrystal, Tara Doyle, and Andrea Dyson.

The 5th single ‘Evil On Call’ was written as an observation of the dark side of social media in which there breeds the unstoppable and impulsive nature of online bullying, harassment, cyberstalking and slander at the convenient press of a button. It is a reflection on the abuse of power that is so easily accessible while being fuelled by invisible and seemingly omnipotent corporate entities. A device driven by money and marketed as a tool that is allegedly designed to bring people together but ends in driving people apart.

Most recent single ‘Malaise’ is an insightful ode to isolation and depression and not being able to escape the feeling but oddly finding peace in the haze and solitude, and in true DIY/lockdown style, Jess Finlayson acted as her own Photographer and first time Video Producer for that release!

Now Raising Ravens have announced the release of debut EP ‘In My Room’ along with an Official Music Video for the title track out 14 January 2021 by regular co-conspirator Lord Tim, along with some shows in and around Sydney to celebrate. The 5 track EP features previously released singles ‘Careful What You Wish For’ and ‘I Don’t Look Good On Paper’ along with some new unreleased music.

‘In My Room’ is a rollicking rock song about frustration over people who do not respect other’s boundaries with inspiration drawn from the behavioural patterns of Finlayson’s delinquent cat, Cyril.

Not one to rest on her laurels during lockdown, Finlayson has been busy launching her own record label Interloper Records, with this EP as the first release.
