PRESS

“Horns grace the edges and a low-fi rumble is emitted with a Jonathan Richman delivery, a Velvet Underground rawness and a sixties splash augmented by delightfully expressed lyrics” Backseat Mafia on ‘Stay Gold’

“Restless Leg have a sound that meanders through your head. It’s DIY but it’s slick and beautiful. They have so much structure and shade to their sound that draws you in and makes you want to know what they’re singing about. You want to be part of the band.” 2SER -The Tuckshop on ‘Stay Gold’ (Single of the Week)

“Lo-fi indie shuffle gets – no, literally – horny as hell on Restless Leg’s latest, with sharp bursts of brass in the chorus adding a renewed sheen to the cracked leather of the worn DM boots that lie underneath.” The Underground Stage

“A group that I really love!” Paul Gough on Chimes 2SER

“It’s a gloriously up tempo jangle pop delight that recalls the almost naive yet wry innocence of early Go-Betweens and the raw energy of The Bats or The Chills, laced with a sense of self-deprecating humour and a whole oil tanker full of melody.” Backseat Mafia on ‘Sow A Little Seed

“Restless Leg show once that they are masters at bringing back the essence of indie music, while still giving it a modern touch that makes their music relevant and fresh in today’s times.” Parapop on Sow A Little Seed’

“The song boasts extremely pleasant melodies and moves between relaxing and refined indie-folk and indie-pop territories: a pure joy!” Indie For Bunnies on ‘Sow A Little Seed’

“Sydney’s Restless Leg serve up a feast for the ears on ‘Dream Buffet’! Making infectious and hook-laden guitar-pop, their sparkling third record is plush full of imagery and is a pandemic-era album for the ages.” 2SER Feature Album

“…equal parts glistening melody and bristling energy, but they also know how to be intricate and crafty when it counts, and they really make it count on this record.” Andrew Khedoori KCRW Global Beat

“Lyrically, Chamie has mined a suburban youth for inspiration and created something that evokes a particular time and place.” Michael Smith, The Music

“It’s a slick, hook-laden jangly piece of classic indie-pop.” Rolling Stone Australia

“Sounds great. Strong vocals and the music rolls along with a delightful Batsian feel reminiscent of Daddy’s Highway era.” Paul Kean The Bats on ‘The World’s A Room’

Sydney band Restless Leg recently released their new single ‘Stay Gold’ and now they reveal the song’s colourful video clip.

The new album Dance Around My Head is out June 21st.

Restless Leg are back with a brand new album in the can and ready for release in June on the new label Sinister Porpoise Records (a new music imprint of the label Love As Fiction Records which has reissued albums by Ammonia, Bluebottle Kiss, Big Heavy Stuff and The Panics).

The band released their self-titled debut in 2013 and follow-up album Some Kind of Restless in 2017. Restless Leg’s third album Dream Buffet combined Flying Nun indie rock, Velvet Underground inspired drone and shambolic Pavement-tinged country and was released in June 2021 to widespread acclaim.

Continuing their winding musical journey, Restless Leg offer another twist of sparky indie pop on their fourth album Dance Around My Head, produced by Jamie Hutchings (Bluebottle Kiss, Infinity Broke). It walks the line between light and shade, fast and slow, loud and soft with the confidence of a band at the height of its powers and which comes from years of friendship and fun making music together.

On the new single ‘Stay Gold’, the band dig into a garage stomp, in the spirit of Lewsberg or Parquet Courts, with rolling bass, jangly guitar stabs and a euphoric chorus and horn section. It’s yet another slice of infectious and eclectic guitar pop from Restless Leg!

The video, shot by Graeme Trewin and edited by the band, finds them in a colourful and quirky performance, with guest appearances from a dinosaur and a tomato.

“This is about, perhaps the misplaced hope, that the qualities of a place or person or some other thing that you love, won’t change,” says Chamie. “I wrote this song for my daughter. She is hilariously and brutally blunt in her opinions about, well, most things really. I hope she stays that way!”

“It’s a fun song to play. The ‘Hey here we come’ is in homage to similar opening lines to many pop songs before this one. But a couple that come to mind are the theme song from the 60s TV show The Monkees and the Hoodoo Gurus’ song ‘The Right Time’ off their 1996 album Crank.”

Things get more ominous and moody on the B-side that accompanies ‘Stay Gold’. The instrumental ‘Blood on The Vines’ combines surf guitar and a noir film aesthetic, complete with some stellar saxophone from bassist Fiona Whalley.

As Chamie explains, “At the time I was addicted to true crime podcasts, so I borrowed the title of ‘Blood On The Vines’ from that of a podcast episode about a murder in the wine-making region of Griffith, New South Wales. But in my mind, it’s a soundtrack to a L.A. noir film and could easily be about a murder in the Napa Valley, California.”

Across the rest of the album you’ll experience the Ride and Stereolab influenced opener ‘Broken Machine’, the David Kilgour (The Clean) meets Velvet Underground sounding ‘Reimagine’ and the warm and woozy guitar interplay of ‘Portraits of the Men Self Made’, which, as the title suggests, addresses the archetype of a ‘self-made man’ and Chamie’s mixed feelings toward him.

There’s the pure jangly pop perfection of ‘Endless Winter’ – Flying Nun meets C86 featuring an acoustic guitar played with a cheese-grater recorded live to analogue tape. The album closer ‘It’s Just How It Is’ was written for Chamie’s other band Peabody but lives on here, with a Motown beat and more of the glorious brass that is so successfully utilised across the album.

If Dream Buffet was a ‘pandemic era album for the ages’ (2SER) then Dance Around My Head emerges from the introspection of that time and reckons with the daydreams that we conjured for ourselves. It’s about our familial relationships, our hopes for the future and the fantastic experience of living in the real world.

‘Stay Gold’ is out now digitally via Bandcamp, streaming services and Amrap for our community friends across Australia.
