Naarm/Melbourne-based singer and musician ANGIE McMAHON (she/her) today shares her first new single in three years, ‘Saturn Returning’. Written as a note-to-self about the importance of self-compassion and letting go, while simultaneously marvelling at the beauty and magic of nature’s cycles, ‘Saturn Returning’ is an astronomical and cinematic return from McMahon, and is released with its accompanying video co-directed by McMahon and Bridgette Winten. ‘Saturn Returning’ is out now everywhere via AWAL, stream HERE.

“I’m gonna love every inch of this body / The limbs that are writing each day of this story / I’m gonna surrender my keys to the universe / Please always catch me the way that you caught me”

Opening on the sounds of moving water and piano layered with trickles of guitar and organ, Angie McMahon comes in both reserved and larger-than-life on ‘Saturn Returning’, as her vocals flow through the song into a sea of harmonies. ‘Saturn Returning’ was informed by McMahon’s own Saturn return – the astrological transit that wreaks major life changes and forces intense growth, signalling one’s emotional entrance into adulthood. It was written in New York during a particularly challenging time (grown from a prompt given in a songwriting group she shared with Mimi Gilbert, Ruby Gill and Hannah Cameron) and brought to life in North Carolina, co-produced by McMahon and Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Snail Mail, The War On Drugs), with instrumentation by Matt McCaughan (drums; Bon Iver), Phil Cook (organ; Bon Iver, Ani DiFranco), and Leif Vollebekk (bass).

Angie McMahon shares, “Your Saturn Return is like a teacher, and this song is a conversation with myself through a time of significant endings and beginnings, where compassion and hope have been the best antidote to my own mental health struggles. The biggest lesson I’ve had in this chapter of my life is the value of a gentle and loving relationship with myself, no matter what. When I went for a walk and listened to it I started crying, feeling like a choir of hopeful voices could see me struggling and they had my back. I realised I’d been writing the song I needed to hear.”

Its accompanying video, co-directed and edited by Angie McMahon and Bridgette Winten (Maple Glider, Winten), was filmed on Bunurong and Barapa Barapa Land in so-called Victoria and shows McMahon moving in connection with the grounding energy of nature, as the visuals play with light and darkness. Of the video McMahon says, “Bridgette captured moments of calmness and aching with a reverence for the magic lens that this song was asking for, and the wonder and power of nature and its forces as an anchor.”

Angie McMahon first entered the cultural consciousness with her breakthrough 2017 indie-rock classic ‘Slow Mover’ and in 2019 released her debut album Salt, a record that would go on to cement her as a globally recognised artist. Bringing a deeply emotive approach to her music with ethereal notes in the vein of Angel Olsen and Florence and the Machine with an explosive live show reminiscent of Big Thief and The War on Drugs, Angie McMahon has become renowned for her truthful storytelling that speaks to the unpolished and messy experiences of life. She has toured the US supporting Hozier, performed at Dot To Dot (UK), Best Kept Secret (NL), Splendour In The Grass and Groovin’ The Moo festivals and shows with Julia Jacklin, Mumford and Sons, Angus and Julia Stone and more.
