Experimental pop connoisseur Aphir has today released her new single Red Giantvideo here – a moving, evocative track about feeling objectified and used by a friend, out now. Red Giant precedes Aphir’s new album Pomegranate Tree, a rich, generous concept album that chronicles the human need for connection and community, and the pitfalls of organised religion, out October 5. Aphir will also be performing a set at Miscellania in Melbourne as part of the Provenance Records catalogue launch on October 6.

Red Giant is tense, assertive and sweeping; the emotion is held tightly until the last third of the track, where Aphir’s innovative production and arrangement skills really shine – sharp textures throw themselves against the beat while Aphir’s tender, eccentric vocal leads the way. Red Giant’s power is in its emotional weight, as Aphir describes the inspiration, “Red Giant came from a time when someone tried to treat their friendship with me as an escape from their relationship going badly. It’s about feeling kinda objectified, being seen as some kind of fix instead of a real person.”

Red Giant, and previous single Rhoda, are taken from the full-length Pomegranate Tree, a broad, captivating record that will inspire and intrigue the listener. For fans of Grimes and fka twigs, Pomegranate Tree is an album to cherish as a whole, to listen to from start to finish and soak in the afterglow. Speaking on the concept behind the record, Aphir explains, “I was brought up in the Christian church so for a big chunk of my life I tried to feel like I belonged in that community. Honestly long after I’d really turned away from it intellectually and started to unpick a lot of the messed up beliefs it instilled in me I still really missed the deeper human connection it offered.

“It sounds weird to say it but later on I felt like I had a pretty similar journey with the music industry – seeing the possibility of connecting with people in that world but paradoxically feeling like I had to hide parts of myself to make friends. And, like anyone I guess, I’ve had other friendships and relationships that have followed that same pattern.”

This special record is the result of years of work, of personal interrogation, of sharpening skills, of researching and observing. It’s a triumph, a beautiful, urgent electronic record that cuts to the heart of what it means to be human and to seek connection. Fans can see Aphir perform tracks from Pomegranate Tree live at Miscellania on October 6 as part of Provenance Records catalogue launch.
