Aussie icon John Williamson is set to release 20th studio album Butcherbird, on August 24. This will be the first original album for Williamson since 2014’s Honest People.

The track Pigs On The River, which John penned in response to greedy irrigators in the Murray-Darling River System, will be available to all fans who digitally pre-order the album, available here.

Butcherbird sees John reflecting on life, love and the bush that surrounds him. With the album partially written on his property in Springbrook, Qld, John took inspiration from his surrounds, highlighted by the album’s cover art which John illustrated himself, with the accompanying image shot at the Springbrook property.

“Butcherbird is probably my most relaxed album ever”, says John. “I didn’t expect to write another eleven songs, but I can’t help myself. It’s a very honest and reflective album and it was quite a breeze to write. Perhaps because at this stage of my career I had a ‘what the hell, just do it’ attitude. It felt right. There’s a crazy song, a protest song, some reflections, underscored by my beautiful Numinbah Valley. Why ‘Butcherbird’? Well, the Butcherbird is my favourite feathered singer. They have been here longer than humans, yet their melodies are remarkably fresh. They are my mates in the garden and have inspired the first track, The Valley of His Dreams.”

With album tracks such as Pigs On The River, Buddy & Slim and Simpson Desert already tried, tested and proven on John’s live audiences, there remains little doubt the new album will resonate with Australians all over and continue to showcase John Williamson’s ability to capture the land, characters and Australian spirit in song.

Williamson’s stellar career spanning close to 50 years in the music industry has seen him inducted into the prestigious ARIA Hall of Fame, secure three ARIA Awards, 26 Golden Guitars, MO Awards, three APRA Awards, Platinum and Gold album accreditations and sell more than four million albums.

The Butcherbird tour will keep John on the road until the end of the year, performing for thousands of fans from Bendigo to Bunbury, Tanunda to Townsville. For a full list of tour dates head to johnwilliamson.com.au/tour/
