Beechworth’s Madman’s Gully, located in the stunning rolling hills of the former Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum, will echo with the hard driving beats of Australia’s favourite 1990s stoner-rockers Tumbleweed as part of Beechworth Music Festival on Saturday 26 January.

Tumbleweed will be joined by an all Australian line-up including the transcendent lyricist Amaya Laucirica, shambolic pop foursome School Damage, throwback rock ‘n’ roller Emilee South, youthful indie Reggae rockers Pablo Pace, blues madmen The Rubber Band, classic charming hip-hop duo Black Magic, local folk singer Sal Kimber and her crack band the Rollin’ Wheel, and Thomy Sloane and Lucy Waldron (Batpiss) fresh from touring with Courtney Barnett.  DJ sets by DJ Mermaid and Architecture in Helsinki from Beechworth’s very own Boom Box caravan the SS Greigwah, will keep punters energised throughout the day.

The Beechworth Music Festival main stage is set in an amphitheatre in ‘Madman’s Gully’, a name given to the location in the 1850s when it became known that gold was plentiful in the gully, 13 or so years before the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum opened in 1867. Apparently, a gold digger ran out of his tent one morning, stark naked, and with a handful of sticks, commenced marking out the ground for himself, threatening vengeance to anyone who would oppose him on his new territory. From here, the name ‘Madman’s Gully’ stuck.

Renowned as one of Victoria’s finest and best-preserved historic gold mining towns, Beechworth was built on the splendour of the early Victorian gold rush. Add to that the bushranger history surrounding Ned Kelly and his gang, the iconic sandstone gaol, the sensational gorge, Bridge Road Brewery and of course, The Beechworth Bakery, this summer festival is well-worth the three hour drive up the Hume Highway from Melbourne, an excellent roadtrip from Sydney and NSW or just for a local getaway for a January weekend.

Free camping is available and the whole festival is family friendly with music and activities kicking off at 4pm on the Friday and 9am on Saturday, with live music commencing early afternoon and rolling well into the evening.

Head up the Hume Highway for the Beechworth Music Festival for a diverse range of alternative music; independence with a good dose of attitude creating a musical smorgasbord to unlock, soothe and shake up your senses.
