Disco-dipping synth genius Australian Athlete (aka Harry Sutherland aka “Australia’s answer to Todd Terje” to his really close friends) returns with his sophomore release “Call Me Up” feat. Florian, out now on Personal Best Records. Ahead of an upcoming hometown show, the Sydney-based synth wunderkind now provides a taste of what’s in store with an addictive track to feed your dance desires.

Deep diving into funk-infused nostalgia, 80s synth boogie and contemporary electronic grooves, “Call Me Up” dials on a quintessential 80s femme-pop vibe while maintaining Sutherland’s exceptional ear for contemporary electronic grooves. Florian joins the floor to amplify the 80s technicolour dream with her synth-pop finesse and killer vocals, channeling the spirit of Gwen Guthrie, Melissa Morgan and Janet Jackson (you’ll even hear a classic disco phone conversation).

Florian says of working on the track: “We felt like the song really paid homage to the old school 80s femme songstress. It’s very dreamy and floaty, so we wanted to throw in a bit of “Australian reality” of how a conversation like this would actually go down, and that’s how the phone call came about. I literally called a friend of mine at 10pm in the studio and we recorded it over the phone to the mic. I gave him a 1 minute briefing: “Pretend we’ve been seeing each other for a while and you say you wanna date me but you’re playing games and not picking up the phone” and bam!”

Sutherland has heralded an impressive reputation as a session and live musician, all whilst collaborating with a plethora of tastemakers such as Touch Sensitive, Donny Benet, The Possé, and Professor Groove, as well as contributing to tracks from label-mates The Goods and PhysiQue. His debut single “Surf ‘N’ Turf” burst onto the scene earlier this year with a dose of warm retro funk and a signature body moving boogie that has caught the eye of music and disco lovers alike, seeing acclaim from FBi Radio and Pilerats calling the track “dazzling and feet-moving in the best of ways”.

Don’t miss your chance to boogie along to “Call Me Up” live at Australian Athlete’s upcoming hometown show at Sydney’s The Lansdowne Hotel on Friday, November 30.
