Today, one of Australia’s most prominent hip-hop figures, B Wise drops his highly anticipated second album, jamie, via Semi Pro Sound. The sophomore body of work presents a landmark moment for the South West Sydney artist, showcasing his dynamic evolution as a performer, and giving audiences a reintroduction into Wise’s most personal work to date.

Since his acclaimed 2018 debut, Area Famous, B Wise has quickly risen through the ranks of Australia’s hip-hop scene. Now for the first time, he offers a deeper, more introspective look into his personal life, and journey as both the artist Wise, and man, Jamie. Executive produced by ARIA Award-winning, Grammy-nominated producer UNO Stereo (Kaiit, Khalid, Wale) and featuring a star-studded lineup of guests, Wise’s project builds on his prolific lyrical prowess with a more matured and dynamic delivery, all the while oozing bravado and charisma we came to love on Area Famous. From conscious decisions spent developing his musicianship to dedicating time for studying his influences, jamie, named after Wise’s childhood nickname, becomes an unguarded yet guided journey of burgeoning confidence and connection to community.

The album commences with the hard hitting “APEX”, produced by Sydney-based producer Mansus, seeing blaring synths and traplike hi-hats give B Wise the green light to explode with an unwavering focus and poise. Next up is the previously released single “Won’t Stop” featuring Western Sydney drill group ONEFOUR, where Wise delivers his smooth wordplay over a triumphant brass sample, with a clear and unapologetic message: he’s still on the rise, and he won’t stop.“On My Soul” sees Melbourne-based Juvé lend his melodic prowess as him and Wise glide over a blend of washy chords, rapid high hats and bouncing 808s. On “WHO?!”, frequent collaborator i.amsolo sets the stage through his fast-paced production, as Wise storms onto the track with a raw lyricism, declaring his stature and challenging others to try and compete in his lane.

“Think Twice” sees Wise team up with three-time MOBO (Music of Black Origin)-nominated London artist Kojey Radical, on a track infused with classic afro-beat rhythms. Next, Wise and Juvé link up again on “Jamie Overstreet” interlude, as Wise effortlessly floats over the laid back sonics. Coming to the midway point of the album, Wise delivers a blend of R&B, baile funk, pop and rap in his feel-good single “B The One”, featuring vocals from fellow South West Sydney-sider Becca Hatch. Added to triple j and community radio alike, Wise inhabits a more intimate and melodic space, presenting the theme of holding someone down and being that constant presence for them.

“U Say” sees Wise yet again showcase his slick vocal versatility, taking centre stage as he sings and raps over a funk-infused bassline accompanied by lush chords and enchanting backing vocals. On “Dus Ya Feet Off”, Wise teams up with producer Aywy and acclaimed New Zealand rapper JessB, where they each trade bars and illustrate their explosive and unpredictable wordplay. On earlier single “Summer Fr3aks”, his fourth link-up with Sydney powerhouse Manu Crooks, their undeniable chemistry is felt in full force as the two bounce off each other, rapping on boundary-pushing and resilience.

“Heavies” sees Wise continue to revel in his freewheeling confidence as low pass filtered chords and an unrelenting 808 cut through. “Black Visionary” welcomes Sydney artist and producer BLESSED to lend his modulated and polished creativity to a track that outlines Wise’s intention to leave behind a transparent and meaningful legacy. Closing out the album is the latest inspiring single, “Ezinna”, championing a dual collaboration with ARIA Award winner, Sampa The Great and acclaimed artist on the rise, Milan Ring. Uplifting harmonies, vigorous basslines and cascading guitar riffs at the hand of Ring drive the track as Wise comes into his own, speaking of reconnecting with your past self and your family before Sampa steps in with her own respective verse on finding home within herself.

B Wise says: “From start to finish this project shows every element to my personality. It feels like a re-introduction and a new chapter in my journey. I set out to also bring together and celebrate community, which I think we executed. Sonically anyone listening will hear the growth and I’m just personally proud of what we put together with the obstacles 2020 and 2021 put in front of us. But it ain’t about that, the music on here is the escape. With love, jamie the record is everything that I hoped it would be and more. It belongs to the people now.”

Sampa The Great on working with B Wise“I think a beautiful thing to know about Wise and I is we knew each other from a while back when I stayed in Sydney. I’d go to the crews studio with Manu, Blessed, Ziggy, Solo and his little brother Tii, who was teaching me about producing beats at the time and we’d kick it. Everyone in their own rooms recording their music, it was like one big musical house. We’ve grown soo much since then and this track is such a beautiful tribute to that journey. An ode to what makes us who we are in all our elements, including most importantly, our beautiful and proud African roots!”

Since introducing himself as a formidable force within Australian hip-hop, B Wise’s Area Famous saw recognition from the AIR Awards, winning Best Independent Hip Hop/Urban Album in 2019, and FBi Radio Sydney Music Arts Culture Award for ‘Record of the Year’ – the first hip-hop album to ever do so. Building on this momentum, Wise has graced the stages of every major festival in Australia, while releasing a relentless streak of singles throughout 2020-2021. From over 28 million streams for his catalogue to date, and praise from the likes of global tastemakers GRM Daily, Acclaim, Complex, triple j, SBTV, NME and more, Wise shows no signs of slowing down.

Throughout jamie, Wise presents his most refined and honest body of work to date, reaffirming his place at the forefront of Australia’s hip-hop scene and offering a glimpse to where his prolific acumen will head in the very near future.
