“Bakers Eddy [are] fresh off the boat and straight into showing Australia how to rock and/or roll…We dig their vibe immensely” – Pilerats“Bakers Eddy make punk music that’s clever and anxiety inducing, always testing on the edge of breaking point but keeping it together with total brutality,” – AAA Backstage

Having dropped a slew of punchy singles over the past year, Melbourne-based punks Bakers Eddy are stoked to follow up with a gritty collection of tracks in their new EP ‘I’m Not Making Good Decisions’, out today. The EP features previous singles ‘If You See Kay’ and ‘Jack Shit For You’, as well as latest track ‘Sad and Happy’, plus three previously unreleased tunes.
Bakers Eddy will be launching the EP with two shows in Sydney and the Gold Coast later this month, before setting off to the UK to play The Alternative Great Escape, plus a handful of shows in Germany.
Talking about the release, Bakers Eddy explain, “It all began when we decided to make the move to Australian shores to pursue our dreams of writing and performing music for a living, a goal far more achievable within Melbourne as opposed to our home town of Wellington, New Zealand.”
“Arriving early 2017 we tee’d up with Producer Tom Larkin who tasked us with a challenge to write 50 songs in 50 days, strung together on unplugged electric guitars and a practice pad in our Essendon lounge room – these 50 new demos were the candidates for our next release,” they continue.
“Drawing inspiration from the new lives we were leading, the songs where about finding our first shitty band flat, struggling to pay rent, relationship stresses and technological dependencies. It wasn’t until we went into Home Surgery Recordings and began pre-production that the top six tracks were chosen and brought to life. Under producer/engineer Jon Grace we approached recording this E.P in a whole new way – we tracked live using fuzzed up gats, a trashy drum sound and rowdy gang vocals giving ‘I’m Not Making Good Decisions’ a dirty in-your-face vibe that’s as subtle as a nail through the foot!”
Having formed in 2009 as an escape from adolescent pressures and career expectations, Bakers Eddy found their sound listening to two and three chorded punk songs. With the original lineup consisting of vocalist CJ Babbington, drummer Jamie Gordon, and bassist Ian Spagnolo, the band expanded to include Ian’s twin brother Alex Spagnolo two years later. “We got sick of him playing PS3 in the same room while we rehearsed, so we taught him an A chord and then he was in.”
For the next two years, the band would go through a few name changes, a few first relationships, and experiment with different genres and substances. In 2015 the band recorded and released two singles and an EP, as well as touring New Zealand throughout the year, clocking up supports with the likes of Gang of Youths, The Rubens, and US band Highly Suspect – all whilst avoiding going to uni or getting real jobs.
By the end of 2016, they decided to throw themselves well out of their comfort zone and move to Melbourne where they teamed up with producer and drummer of Shihad, Tom Larkin. After cutting their
teeth on the Melbourne live circuit last year, and releasing two surefire punk rock bangers, Bakers Eddy are gearing up for the release of their sophomore EP due Friday 13th April.
