BATTS, the moniker for Melbourne based singer-songwriter Tanya Batt, today unveils her mesmerising and melancholic debut EP 62 Moons alongside new single ‘Somedays’, released through the newly announced THAA Records.

Named after the 62 Moons of Saturn, the obsession with space is an underlying theme throughout the record, from the NASA recording of Saturn’s rings which opens the recording, to the EP title.

“When NASA began to release the sounds of space it blew my mind. Saturn has always been my favourite for many reasons but when I first heard the sound of Saturn’s rings, it really connected. In that moment, I had the thought of combining the music we create as humans, with the natural music of things out in space that have existed for billions and billions of years. I want to instil knowledge of space within music to people, but not via lyrics – via sounds.” -BATTS

Following on from her previously released singles, the slowly building ‘For Now’ and the gentle, reflective ‘Little White Lies’, 62 Moons is the culmination of many days at home, alone writing and perfecting her storytelling. Stripped back tune ‘Change’ showcases BATTS’ incredible vocals, lending strength to the emotional track, whilst haunting closer ‘Somedays’ flaunts her masterful layering skills, employing a mix of guitars and modular synths.

Four of the Five songs were tracked with band mates Lachlan O’Kane, Hayden Calnin, Ross Beaton and Brendan Tsui with engineer Isaac Barter live in a Geelong studio in a matter of five hours, capturing the raw and electrifying energy of her live performance.

Having found her signature spacey, shoe-gaze, psych-tinged folk pop, and taking cues from the likes of Mazzy Star, Sigur Ros and Julia Jacklin, BATTS has received worldwide acclaim from FBi Radio, triple j Unearthed, BBC and Radio X for her recent releases. Racking up some serious support slots, she’s opened for Oliver Tank, Timberwolf, I know Leopard and The Teskey Brothers.

62 Moons is an impressive debut offering and with tour dates around the corner, it’s time to get well acquainted with BATTS.
