Brisbane-based BEKS shares her new eye catching music video today for her recent pop bop ‘The Thing About Us’, combining poignant lyrics and dance floor ready production for a track you can really cry to on the dance floor. Debuting new music in 2020, BEKS is the impressive artist project from Rebecca Callandar, the former front woman & guitarist of all-girl, punk-rock band RACKETT and drummer of Bec and Ben.
True to the songs lyrics, the music video is a tale about falling in love in the age of dating apps. Directed by Beau Bressington, the video is a visual feast with BEKS wearing clothing by Brisbane designer Kimbralou while she explores the city with a new love. The music video was also brought full circle by from the cast involved, when BEKS and Beau were trying to cast actors for the music video she struggled to find chemistry with them. She was also seeing a new love interest, she had just met on tinder and decided to cast her new beau in the role. The relationship started to unravel during filming, BEKS noting the mock fight turned into a real-life argument and they broke up shortly after filming saying, “The context of the mock fight translated into real-life, which was spooky but not unbelievable considering my flailing love life and constant state of independence is the inspiration for the song.”

After much time songwriting and focusing on a solo career, in late 2020, BEKS debuted with two singles ‘Stars in My Eyes’ and ‘The Thing About Us’. Since then her songs have gone onto chart at #1 on the Triple J Unearthed Dance Charts and #3 on the Electronic Charts and added to Nova and Coles Radio. The enigmatic singles also drew the attention of local and international press featured in HYPE Machine, Le Future Wave and more. BEKS is also a creative powerhouse, using her skills in video production and film to produce Loud n Queer TV during COVID 2020. As executive producer of the digital program, Rebecca curated and produced over 60 artists like; Jess B and Kota Banks. The shows aired weekly during Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in partnership with Heaps Gay.
Beks has been working throughout 2020 on writing her debut mixtape set for release in 2021. The mixtape features co-writes and production by Taka Perry, Jim Eliot (Ladyhawke, EAST), Xira, Cam Nacson, Lucy Neville, Nina Jirachi, Kim Moyes (The Presets), Airports and more.
‘The Thing About Us’ really cements that the thing about BEKS is; we can’t wait to see what she does next.
