The iconic Slim Dusty Country Music Festival in Kempsey NSW will not be held in 2019, instead organisers will relaunch the event in 2020 with changes that are expected to increase tourism and deliver strong economic benefits for the Kempsey region.

To mark the anniversary month of the passing of Slim Dusty, the event will now be held over four days from 3rd to 6th September 2020, celebrating its 15th year. This is also an ideal time for an outdoor festival as metrological data shows that September has the lowest annual rainfall in the Kempsey district.

The event has also been given a new name: THE SLIM DUSTY KEMPSEY FESTIVAL.

The inclusion of the beautiful NSW mid-north coast town in the title will bring a renewed focus on the region and attract broader support from partners and key stake holders ensuring the sustainability of the festival well into the future.

“As the event is a popular fixture on the national entertainment calendar, we will not be moving away from the ethos of the festival or ignoring its roots – a celebration of the music of one of our quintessential and most loved Australians, Slim Dusty,” said Chairman of the Slim Dusty Centre, Dr. David Kirkpatrick. It will also maintain the involvement of the legion of artists and musicians who continue to be inspired by Slim’s huge body of work.”

“We will however work towards producing an event that will have a positive impact on attendance leading to a significant increase on tourism and ultimately provide some tangible economic benefits to the Kempsey region and the state of NSW.”

Kempsey Shire Mayor, Cr Liz Campbell, echoed Dr. Kirkpatrick’s comments and welcomed the new branding saying that it “builds on Kempsey’s country music traditions with a fresh vision and focus to grow the festival’s reputation to a broader audience. The new name will help project Kempsey as a country music and tourism destination which will be a huge cultural and economic boost for the town.”

Details of the 2020 festival are yet to be finalised, but it is expected that a line-up announcement along with ticketing and other information will be made in early 2020.
