Ahead of their national tour starting in Eora/Sydney tomorrow, Big Scary today share the music video for sweetly sung duet ‘Lonely Age’, lifted from their new album Me and You (out now through Pieater/Inertia) – watch HERE.
Big Scary’s national tour – which will see them perform as a two-piece for the first time since 2013 – kicks off in Eora/Sydney tomorrow night, nipaluna/Hobart on Friday night before hitting Kaurna Country/Adelaide on Saturday night. Joining them on all dates is special guest Beckah Amani, and Gabriella Cohen will also perform in Naarm/Melbourne. Tickets are on sale now from bigscary.net, and full details are below.
The ‘Lonely Age’ video was filmed and directed by Nick Mckk (Julia Jacklin, Elizabeth, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever), who also filmed and directed Big Scary‘s ‘Goodbye Earle Street’. On the video, Jo Syme shares “The brief for the ‘Lonely Age’ vid was very simple – just a one shot performance in the garden, inspired by footage of Karen Dalton playing on her front step. Nick Mckk brought a little more effort and it turned into a very sweet clip, again shot at Phillip Island on Boonwurrung land. The wind kept blowing our set made of bricks, brooms and ladders over. Some of the props have a little bit of meaning, and some are red herrings!”

The first taste of Me and You was the generous ‘Real Love’ / ‘Devotion’ double-A side, which came to act as a beacon for what to expect from the album: tenderness, nostalgia and reflections on relationships. As opposed to 2021’s Daisy, which saw the band get a little bit silly and a little bit rock opera, Me and You displays the slowed-down version of Tom and Jo’s creative dynamic. Acoustic guitar returns to the fore, harking back to very early Big Scary days, framed throughout the album by the grand piano, inviting warmth and comfort across the album’s ten tracks. Tension, or Bacharach-inspired romance, are built by string arrangements, while Tom and Jo’s vocals peppers a familiar sweetness across the album.
Big Scary – Tom Iansek and Jo Syme – formed in Melbourne in 2006, and have since created an extensive and critically acclaimed body of work across seven EPs – S/T (2008); The Mini EP (2009); At the Mercy of the Elements (2010); Autumn/Winter/Spring/Summer (2010) – and five full-length albums – Vacation (2011); Not Art (2013); Animal (2016); Daisy (2021) – which have seen nominations and wins at the AIR Awards, J Awards, ARIA Awards and the Australian Music Prize. Me and You (2022), their fifth album, was named Feature Album on Double J, SYN FM and Edge Radio, Best New Music on The Guardian, Music Feeds, Aus Music Scene, The Music and more.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
