Australian Hip Hop pioneer, writer and actor BRIGGS has teamed up with the multi-talented comedian, actor and composer TIM MINCHIN to record a new song titled ‘HOUSEFYRE’. A collaborative effort undertaken during self-isolation, the track provides a comedic and observational commentary on the Australian political leadership during the recent bushfire crisis and the COVID – 19 pandemic.

Briggs explains how the idea came about: “Cabin fever manifests in strange ways and while I’ve been stuck at home working on new music and practising good social distancing, the idea came to me to hit up my friend Tim Minchin to work on a fun idea. Black and red together hasn’t looked this good since the ’93 grand final.”

On the collaboration Tim Minchin says ‘I’ve been wanting to do something with Briggs for years but couldn’t work out what idea to go to him with. Then a few days ago, he sent a track over and asked if I’d wanna write a chorus for it. I think my exact words were “fuck yeah”. So much fun to make, and such a buzz to work with the Senator.’

The companion video has been created by actor and director Christiaan Van Vuuren known for his work on BondiHipsters and ABC’s Soul Mates and features both Briggs and Tim Minchin at their respective homes on a hilarious and tongue-in-cheek video call discussion about the latest news. The clip was filmed in isolation; completely on their smart phones and in compliance with the most recent restrictions for social distancing.

Despite making light of the situation, Briggs reinforces the severity of the pandemic “It’s easy to look smart while pointing out when things are stupid and our current leadership has given us a lot to point at, from Hawaii to SportsRorts. I don’t feel very smart sitting inside my house, but the COVID-19 outbreak is really serious and the smartest thing we all can do right now is to STAY HEALTHY. Wash our hands, stay safe and practise social distancing”

The accompanying artwork has been created by renowned visual artist Scottie Marsh known for his murals depicting political figures.  His most iconic and recognisable works have garnered world-wide attention, dealing with issues as diverse as liquor-licensing laws (Casino Mike 2016to environmentalism(Reef Killers 2017), and Marriage Equality (Bride of Tony Abbott, 2017).  The ‘HouseFyre’ artwork is a satirical representation of Peter Dutton holding Scott Morrison on the bow of the Ruby Princess Cruise ship, as in the iconic scene from Titanic.

The artist royalties from all sales and streams of ‘HouseFyre’ will be donated towards supporting, protecting and raising awareness among Indigenous communities of the COVID-19 pandemic and assisting with local response efforts. A fundraising campaign has been established Here where people can contribute.

Stay tuned for more new music from Briggs mid 2020.
