Brisbane Festival 2019 has come tearing out of the gates with its largest musical line-up to-date, and what better way to kick it off than an opening night party celebrating the 30th birthday of Riverstage.
On Sat 7 September, Riverstage Birthday Bash will celebrate Brisbane’s iconic outdoor amphitheatre with an electrifying musical experience. Party starters Hot Dub Time Machine will explode onto stage with an audio-visual showcase of songs from every decade and genre – from ‘60s rock to ‘90s RnB and through to today’s hits – plus a special Riverstage Top 30 countdown. Joining Hot Dub Time Machine is a thumping line-up of our river city’s best and brightest including pop four-piece Cub Sport, electro-pop wonders Confidence Man, indie-rockers Last Dinosaurs and hypnotic rising star Clea. It’s going to be the Best. Party. Ever!
Riverstage’s 30th birthday is the gift that keeps on giving, and the celebrations will serve as a fulcrum for the 2019 Brisbane Festival line-up, no better example of which is ‘The Amity Affliction: Heaven and Hell’. A Brisbane Festival exclusive on Sat 14 September, ‘Heaven and Hell’ will see Australia’s most successful heavy music exports The Amity Affliction bring friends and compatriots Underøath, Crossfaith, Trophy Eyes, Make Them Suffer, Void of Vision, Thornhill, Pagan, Endless Heights and South East Desert Metal.
Closing out the festival celebrations at Riverstage, and in tandem with the iconic dazzling fireworks display that is Sunsuper Riverfir, City and Colour with The Jezabels, Asha Jeffries and many more to be announce will headline the grand finale event in a stellar performance exclusive to Brisbane Festival.
The moniker of singer/songwriter Dallas Green, City and Colour is known for his contributions as a singer, rhythm guitarist, and songwriter for post hardcore band Alexisonfire, together with duo You+Me, a collaboration with Alecia Moore (P!nk) and a canon ripe with songs over the course of five studio albums. Green is adored by a legion of fans worldwide, his music garnering him three Juno Awards, including two songwriter of the year awards. This exclusive Australian show will see him play crowd favourites from his back catalogue alongside new tunes from his forthcoming sixth studio album, his first original music in almost four years.
City and Colour’s exclusive Brisbane appearance has been made possible through support from the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland. Brisbane Festival features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar, worth $800m to the state’s economy in 2019.
Moving over to QPAC, Sat 6 September will see Grammy-Award winning composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Jacob Collier perform for one night only. Adored by Quincy Jones and considered to be one of the most innovative, creative musicians of his generation, Jacob Collier brings a light show synchronised to his signature live looping and custom-built harmonies. On Sat 27 September Brisbane’s own Eurovision doyenne Kate Miller-Heidke’s masterful songwriting and ethereal voice will take you where there’s zero gravity.
At The Tivoli, Sat 14 September will see Holy Holy launch their sophomore album and share their soaring melodies and lush instrumental textures. Queensland’s own folk-rock favourites The Middle East and special guest Banff pull into town for a one-off show on Fri 13 September, whilst Tropical F*ck Storm (TFS) provide a live soundtrack to the Cohen Brother’s cult thriller No Country For Old Men – it’s a visceral psych-punk explosion and match made in heaven.
For those looking to dance, Australian house music royalty Groove Terminator will perform his legendary 90’s House 5 DJ mix live on The Tivoli stage, with a gospel choir featuring singers from the Gospo Collective and Brisbane’s Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts (ACPA). With guest vocalists and an amazing line-up of DJ legends, this church will bring you to your knees! Can we get an AMEN?
Tivoli in the Round returns for a second season. Get up close and personal with four of Australia’s best artists in this unique in the round experience. Over four consecutive evenings enjoy multi-platinum singer-songwriter Emma Louise, the sonically immersive No Mono, Paul Dempsey of Something for Kate and psychedelic folk dreamers Husky. These rare immersive performances allow for an intimate connection between artist and the audience.
Over to the The Courier-Mail Speigeltent and the Brisbane Festival 2019 line up will bear witness to a series of stellar shows including Californian indie-rock band Girlpool, two-time Queensland Music Award-winners MZAZA, Nashville singer/songwriter Justin Townes Earle, Tigerlilly singer/songwriter Lydia Fairhall’s new band The Black She Oaks, Brisbane rapper and singer Carmouflage Rose and the tremendous Tia Gostelow.
British RNB singer/songwriter Bruno Major will make his Brisbane debut at The Courier-Mail Speilgeltent hot on the heels of a breakthrough year amassing more than 250 million streams, multiple sold-out North America tours and a UK arena tour with Sam Smith.
Bringing it all back home, I Left My Heart In Highgate Hill is the ultimate romantic ode to Brisbane. On Sat 14 September, the show is performed by some of our best home-grown female singers including Lucinda Shaw, Roz Pappalardo, Deb Suckling, Rachael Dixon, Sue Ray, Megan Cooper, Jackie Marshall, Charlotte Emily and Laura Purnell, and brought to life by a five piece band with special guest John Willsteed (The Go-Betweens). Jazz On Sunday’s will bookend the three Sundays – 8, 15 and 22nd September – featuring Brissy locals Yas Queen, Shannon Marshall + The Soul Almighty and Leigh Carriage Quintett for a lazy, Jazzy Sunday afternoon.
