Praise for ‘SAVE YOU FROM YOURSELF’:

“Her new release is a touching mid-tempo indie pop jam that really manages to stand out with its slightly melancholic and dark soundscape. The piano delivers engaging harmonies, while the drums create a mid-tempo rhythm that lets the vocals unfold beautifully above them.”IndieTapes Music Blog

“Melbourne-based artist Canisha’s latest release, “Save You From Yourself,” is a heartfelt and raw exploration of her deepest fears for a loved one facing the challenges of mental health and substance reliance. Emerging as an acoustic piece during Canisha’s participation in the Singing Our Futures mentorship program, this song evolved in the studio with producers Anthony Liddell and Jake Amy. Featuring the haunting backing vocals of Canisha’s mentor, Bumpy, the track is imbued with layers of soul, sincerity, and resilience, spotlighting Canisha’s nuanced artistry.”AktMusic, Ghana

Soul singer Canisha has recently unveiled her poingnant new single “Save You From Yourself” (October 23), released via Bad Apples Music. To celebrate, she will host a hometown launch show on November 1 at the Persa Bandroom in Fitzroy.

The Official Music Video premiering on AMNplify was directed by Cat Huong of Love Rat Studios, filmed in Naarm/Melbourne. The cover art for the single is derived from the video. Talking about creating the video, Canisha said “Filming a video for a song with a sensitive topic was hard at first. I’m not an actor, so I just kept laughing a lot of time. And then I found myself getting into it and crying. The day was full of emotion, but I had a supportive team around me. The scenes running in the street were the funniest to film. My mum was driving my car, while director Cat Huong sat in the boot of my car and we would run after the car. My mum kept driving too fast and couldn’t hear Cat screaming slow down and I couldn’t keep up with the car. Cat was fantastic to work with, I just came to them with my idea and they made it work.”

Co-written as part of the Singing Our Futures program with Canisha’s mentor Bumpy, and featuring Bumpy on backing vocals, “Save You From Yourself” originally emerged as an acoustic song and was taken to new levels in the studio with producers Anthony Liddell and Jake Amy.

Based in Melbourne/Naarm, Canisha is a soul singer with an edge, a lyricist whose emotive and playful music captivates and draws you in. A First Nations artist with an enchanting exploration of emotion in her music, Canisha’s debut EP ‘Don’t Be Scared’ showcased her confident and lush pop sound, her textured and rich music infused with inviting and warm vocals.

Canisha has performed at festivals like Yirramboi Festival, St. Kilda Music Festival, Share The Spirit at Sidney Myer Music Bowl and Treaty Day Out. Inspired by artists like Adele and Harry Styles, Canisha has grown in confidence and purpose, using music to overcome social anxiety and connect with audiences. Her music blends pop sensibilities with soul flavour marked by raw lyricism and storytelling. The Singing Our Futures program was established by the Archie Roach Foundation in collaboration with Culture is Life. It has evolved from the rich legacy left behind by Uncle Archie Roach, a legacy centred around the art of storytelling and truth-telling through music, as well as his dedication to nurturing and creating significant opportunities for emerging First Nations artists. This program delivers invaluable support to its mentees as they follow their pathway into songwriting and recording, also facilitating opportunities for them to showcase their talents through partnerships with well-known events. Over the past two years it has evolved into an autonomous mentoring initiative, persistently growing by recognising the fundamental needs for First Nations artists.

The program has been under the leadership of Candice Lorrae (of The Merindas), an accomplished singer/songwriter and music producer with Jawoyn and Torres Strait Islander heritage. Singing Our Futures has seen emerging artists receive mentorship from some of the country’s most prominent artists, including Emily Wurramurra, Dan Sultan, Emma Donovan, Dobby, and Bumpy.
