Carla Wehbe today marks her return with her first solo release of  2021 – a bright new head-turning singleHurts To Love You’. Drenched in her trademark nostalgic pop – the single is accompanied by a striking video which was co-directed and co-edited by Carla alongside Murli Dhir. Flexing her knack for communicating universal truths with pure authenticity, ‘Hurts To Love You’ is a song that is sure to feel painfully relatable.

“It’s about losing someone that you care deeply about,” says Carla of the track’s origins. “You love them so much that it hurts too much to be close to them, so you have to separate yourself. And you realise that all the things you spoke about doing, or planned to do, aren’t going to happen anymore and you’re just going to have to live with that.”

Her first release under her new label deal, Carla has recently joined the family at Warner Music Australia who couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome her to their ranks.

“I’ve been watching Carla’s growth for some time now, and she’s proved on her own terms what an incredibly important voice she has in the local artist community,” says Paul Harris (SVP A&R Warner Music Australasia). “Given the international reactions we have been getting from Carla’s songs, I’m confident that a very broad future is going to open up her from here on in. We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome her to the Warner Music Australia roster.”

Dan Rosen (President, Warner Music Australasia) adds, “She is an exceptional talent with a unique and authentic voice and we cannot wait for music fans around Australia and the world to hear her music. As we continue to grow and evolve our local roster, Carla is going to play an integral part of that vision.”

‘Hurts To Love You’ was first created with Norwegian songwriters Jim Bergsted and Helge Moemthat that Carla connected with over Instagram, with Sydney’s Xavier Dunn later adding additional production. The track, though, speaks to experiences all Carla’s own. “I’ve never felt more broken in my life than when I was writing this track,” she explains. “I’ve been in relationships before but there was something so different about this one that just destroyed me. But looking back now it was the best thing that could have ever happened to me — because it forced me to really look inside myself and work out what I needed to change, and the places I needed to grow as a person. The universe could have been a little bit kinder, but I guess that’s how it had to happen.”

Carla Wehbe is a multi-dimensional talent. She is not only an artist, self-taught producer and in demand songwriter but also a skilled videographer and photographer, who is even cutting her teeth in fashion by launching her own clothing line in 2022. She has shot and directed two or her own music videos, taking charge of everything down to the set design, props and costuming. Her video clips are decorated with pieces from Carla’s personal retro collection of TVs, radios, furniture and computers. For Carla, leading all aspects of her music isn’t about being in control for control’s sake, but getting to do the things she loves and exploring her creativity in all facets.

First stepping into music as a teenager, Carla’s debut official release came in 2019 when she collaborated with Tyron Hapi on the hit single ‘Touched’ – the track going on to be streamed more than 6 million times. In 2020 she independently released her debut EP Half Past Nine, landing on high rotation on triple j. 2021 has seen her collaborate with rapper Illy on the track ‘No Feelings’, part of his #1 ARIA chart selling album The Space Between. And most recently, Carla has lent her writing prowess to Vera Blue’s current single ‘Temper’.

Merging current pop melodies with a retro nostalgia, Carla Wehbe’s signature sound is a combination hard to ignore. Carla’s music is so of the times yet is doused in familiarity. She likes to look to the past drawing inspiration from 60s, 70s and 80s icons like ABBA, Queen, The Bee Gees and The Beatles, as well as leaning into contemporary influencers like King Princess and Harry Styles.
