“Peace comes out of chaos. The one thing that is constant is change.” – Jimmy Kyle

Today, Naarm First Nations led indie punk band Chasing Ghosts release their new album Therapy, out now via Believe Music (digital) & Summit Distro (physical).

Produced by ARIA nominated producer Stevie Knight (Stand Atlantic, Redhook, Yours Truly, Sleeping With Sirens) and mixed by James Paul Wisner (Paramore, Underoath), “Therapy by Chasing Ghosts isn’t just a record, it is a conversation starter. The themes and ideas covered in the Naarm outfit’s new album are more important now than ever before. When listening to Therapy take note of its zealous lyricism, let it anger, energise and understand you.”  – Wall Of Sound

The band also shares a video for the new single Flowers.

About Flowers Jimmy Kyle states; “This track is dedicated to the loving memory of Sean ‘SK’ Kennedy. Our friendship really started back in 2006 when he was touring as bassist for I Killed The Prom Queen. The
weekend Sean passed, he had come to watch Chasing Ghosts headline The Corner Hotel; I saw him from the stage watching and smiling, leaning against a pillar. We yarned up as always, then messaged till the early hours over the phone, never knowing it would be the last time. This song begs you to talk with your friends when you’re down, to seek help, to remember all things come to pass, and that you’re never alone. Vale Sean. SK Forever.”

Chasing Ghosts have always been a band whose music has championed urgency in its messaging. Unbridled passion and fury meets honest storytelling and observations delivered by frontman and songwriter, Jimmy Kyle.

A Thungutti man who has emerged as one of Australia’s most important voices in recent years, Kyle’s lyricism has seasoned and matured beautifully since the release of Chasing Ghosts’ 2011 debut, Confessions From A Phone Booth. As a songwriter, Kyle marries introspection with boldness as his stories confront, deconstruct and illuminate the challenging realities of being an Indigenous Australian; while also championing human persistence, the ability to overcome, and the recognition of beauty in even the most flawed.

It is this sense of boldness that has made Chasing Ghosts a beloved live act and an exciting one to watch develop with each studio project. With the release of their new album Therapy, Chasing Ghosts reconnect with fresh perspective and attack some of their most personal and intimate material yet with cathartic strength. As the title suggests, Therapy has its links to music – the creation of a space where expression is unfiltered and allowed to explore areas of dark and light.

“I wrote what came really naturally to me,” he says. “I said, “Stop making so many rules for yourself, just write what’s in your heart.” Most of my songs are contradictory in the sense that sometimes they’ll sound really happy and the lyrics will be really depressing, or the other way around. These songs, although they are pretty emotive, they make me want to move as well. I wanted to do something sonically big and explosive, and feel something again.”

“It’s about balancing the line of authenticity and trying to do it with a bit of grace and a bit of timelessness,”Kyle says.“Trying to leave something that’s not all about me. That’s when it becomes about everyone. That’s the best place, when you get to share it. Each record, I’ve tried to make an evolution and a bigger arc; this is just the beginning of another chapter.”

As an album, Therapy is unafraid to be vulnerable as it journeys confrontational issues faced by many: mental health crises, domestic violence, intergenerational trauma; and the process of recognising and navigating one’s way through to a healthier outcome.

The undercurrent of hope and optimism that remains threaded throughout Therapy speaks Chasing Ghosts’ belief that growth and evolution can manifest in different forms, and at different times in our lives. Everyone is on a different path in this sense, but this is music that has been made to connect when it needs to for the listener – at whichever point in their journey it may.

The Therapy Australian Tour kicks off this June with special guests Brisbane alt-rock band The Comfort and Melbourne pop punk band Cordiform. Chasing Ghosts will be bringing their indie punk rock anthems to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Ballarat and Adelaide. Full tour details below.

“The Therapy artwork concept was a collaboration between myself and multi-disciplinary artist Shal Allen; another First Nations artist, and a proud Bundjalung man.” says Jimmy Kyle

“The artwork is of the river system that breathes life into Thunghutti Barri (Thunghutti Country). It depicts what makes me, me and where I draw my resilience from, my home. In the foreground by stark contrast, an ominous contemporary neon title boldly casting both light and shadow across the artistic interpretation of the Macleay River; the many estuaries and creeks of my homelands.”
