City Recital Hall is thrilled to announce that fast-rising Southern California upstarts Thee Sacred Souls will be bringing their self-titled debut album to Sydney on Friday 15 March 2024 for a captivating performance as part of the venue’s Switched On series.
Launched in 2019, Thee Sacred Souls began when drummer/songwriter Alex Garcia and bassist/songwriter Sal Samano bonded over their similar experiences growing up in southern California and a mutual affinity for record collecting. Inspired by the lowrider scene of Chula Vista and Imperial Beach as well as their ever-growing collection of crate dug records, the duo just needed a vocalist. Enter singer/songwriter Josh Lane, who brought his love for soul titans like Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson into the fold, along with his show-stopping vocals that he honed whilst studying classical voice in college, and the timeless sound of Thee Sacred Souls was born.
Performing live as a seven-piece (the core trio plus guitar, keys, and two backup vocalists), the band immediately generated a local buzz, putting them on the radar of Daptone Records’ co-founder Gabriel Roth (aka producer Bosco Mann). As if it was inevitable, the band found themselves at Roth’s Riverside studio just three days later, ready to record their debut album.
Thee Sacred Souls’ first few releases saw the accolades come thick and fast, with co-signs ranging from Alicia Keys and Princess Nokia to Black Pumas, Timbaland and Gary Clark Jr., the band gained attention from Billboard, Rolling Stone and KCRW and racked up 40 million streams globally on just a handful of singles. Then came their self-titled debut album, a warm and textured record that mixes the easy-going grace of sweet 60s soul with the grit and groove of early 70s R&B. Lane’s weightless vocals are anchored by the rhythm section’s deep pocket and infectious chemistry as hints of Chicano, Philly, Chicago, Memphis, and even Panama soul turn up in the sound. While it’s tempting to toss around labels like “retro” and “vintage” with this deliberately analogue collection, there is a rawness and a sincerity that transcends time and place. Get ready to be engrossed as this unique sound is brought to life at City Recital Hall in March.
Thee Sacred Souls’ intoxicating live performance has seen them tour with the likes of Belle and Sebastian and St. Paul & The Broken Bones, they accompanied Cory Henry at Central Park SummerStage in July, have received standing ovations and encore demands from the Beacon to the Greek Theatre and have sold-out headlining shows with little notice in advance. Get ready to groove and swoon to their lush horns, velvety vocals and smooth rhythms when they visit Sydney. It’s sure to be one special night, so gather your nearest and dearest and purchase your tickets now.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
