For the first time in Australia, the Songwriting in Education Symposium (SES) 2020 hosted by Collarts will bring together educators and creators working in contemporary songwriting education in an academic setting.

The SES will bring together educators, academics conducting research in the field of songwriting, and teachers, students, songwriters, and musicians seeking to expand their knowledge in the practice of teaching and learning contemporary songwriting.

The SES is the brainchild of Keppie Coutts and Jesse Hooper, both internationally recognised songwriters and contemporary music educators.

Keppie Coutts, who sits on faculty at Collarts, Berklee Online, and the Sydney Conservatorium Open Academy says, “A lot of people still believe that songwriting is something that people are either born good at or not. It turns out that that’s not at all true. The symposium will bring together Australia’s most experienced songwriting educators to share their wisdom and practices.”

Jesse Hooper (APRA Songwriter of the Year 2000 & ARIA award-winning band Killing Heidi) says, “The aim of the symposium is to create a strong community and network of educators in this exciting and flourishing creative field. We want Australia to be at the forefront of contemporary music education, and songwriting is at the heart of music creation.”

Held over September 4 and 5 2020 at Collarts in Melbourne, the two-day symposium will be composed of presentations and workshops held by some of the world’s leading songwriting educators, performances and workshops held by some of Australia’s luminary songwriters, and opportunities to meet and network with others in the field of songwriting education.

People interested in attending or presenting at the symposium can visit HERE to register. Information on current presenters can also be found on the same page.
