Deb Suckling is a longstanding and much loved member of the Brisbane music scene. Her recent creative triumphs include the release of her three singles, “Awkward,” “Clean Me Out,” and “Romeo and Juliet” – each taking on a new facet of Deb’s talent with its own pace and lyrical content. Now we get to see the whole package, with her debut solo album Worthy which came out on February 18.

The songwriter’s sound could be best described as a union of alt-rock and noise pop, and the result has already garnered her media love from major outlets such as 4ZZZ radio in Brisbane, where Worthy reached number 13 on the Top 20 chart, Scenestr and Amnplify. Album track “Awkward” also made it into the 4ZZZ Hot 100 shortlist for 2021.

Jeff Lovejoy and Jason Millhouse engineered Worthy, with Paul Blakey on mastering. The instrumentation was predominantly by Deb herself, with the exception of Tristan Barton and Deb’s son Jude (aka HYSTXERIA) programming the drum and beats and her longterm partner Craig Spann on guitars and noise.

“This album is very much about dealing with my past as a survivor of both domestic and sexual violence,” Deb told Scenestr about her record.

“It has been a very long journey in terms of acknowledging my past and being able to speak freely about those experiences without feeling the shame and fear that goes with those experiences, and this album for me is about having a kind of freedom that I have never felt before.”

Deb has released a host of records over the years, most notably with the bands Brindle and Lucy Star Satellite. But she is equally well known for powerful music projects including The Soldier’s Wife, You Can’t Take Me and the Big Sky Girls mentoring program and her work in the music industry over the past two decades.

Her noble work continues in being a speaker for victims of domestic violence, as she advocates for and shares her own stories. This has seen her involved with a number of organisations and even appeared as a guest speaker and performer at the Brisbane Women’s March 4 Justice at the start of 2021. Worthy hit the world on February 18. The album was launched in a glorious fashion at Brisbane’s heritage-listed Powerhouse to an awed crowd on November 7, with more exciting shows to come.

WORTHY is out now!
