Double J’s
50 Most Memorable
Movie Soundtracks

The right movie soundtrack infinitely heightens the experience of watching a film. It can completely alter the way you construe a scene and can make you completely change your opinion on a song you once hated (or loved).
You can’t think of the opening to Trainspotting without ‘Lust For Life’. Reservoir Dogs is a different film if you take out ‘Stuck In The Middle With You’ and, even though the film came 15 years later, many of us now consider ‘Love Is In The Air’ intrinsically linked to Strictly Ballroom.
In isolation, a soundtrack can provide a pathway to exciting new musical discoveries. It can open your mind to music you never knew you loved and music that will go on to soundtrack your own life.
In the 90s we consumed film soundtracks more veraciously than ever, as both mainstream and underground film makers seemed to frame more of their stories around the music used not just alongside, but as a part of the work they were making.
But we’ve always loved film soundtracks and, if the great music that has accompanied films in 2018 is anything to go by (have you seen Call Me By Your Name?), we always will.
So, on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 June, we’re counting down the soundtracks from across the past 50 odd years that have stuck in our heads long after we’ve left the cinema, rewound the tape, ejected the DVD and killed the stream.
Soundtracks that stand alone as glorious pieces of art and soundtracks that make the art they accompany just that little bit better. Hell, there are probably going to be a few soundtracks in there that completely dwarf the films they accompany in terms of quality.
