With the announcement of new, specially curated program elements including practical music workshops and industry advice forums, the 2018 Gympie Music Muster has evolved into a music festival unlike any other in Australia.
The Muster is also the only festival to provide multiple platforms to shed a light on young talent and help foster music industry success through the 28th annual Muster Talent Search and the Emerging Talent Showcase, along with a newly launched Music Industry Workshop and Harmonica, Guitar and Ukulele workshops. Music industry hopefuls young and old will find the tools they need to kick-start their career at the Muster, from a chance to perform alongside iconic musicians on the main stage to personalised advice from industry professionals and established recording artists.
After a one-year break, the Muster Talent Search returns bigger and better than before, with an all-new world-class prize pool including a trip to Nashville Tennessee, the career birthplace of some of the world’s most iconic musicians. Better yet, the winner will be escorted to all the Nashville hot spots by none other than Muster veterans, Golden Guitar and CMC award winners Troy Kemp, and Damien from the Viper Creek Band. Anyone, from the most fresh-faced newbie to the wisest crooner, is welcomed to try their luck in front of the Muster crowds and an esteemed judging panel. Past winners include Brooke McClymont, Liam Brew and Drew McAlister.

The Muster is proud to announce the Talent Search Ambassador for this year, Brooke Schubert, who has won three sections of the competition before and since established a reputable career in the Australian music industry. Being championed by Australia’s most successful country music export, Keith Urban, on his national tours, helped Brooke to eventually tour with ARIA award-winners Sheppard, and also to enjoy a successful stint on The Voice in 2017.
“The Gympie Muster and my family has always had close ties,” said Brooke.“It’s just a part of our history in a way. My mother attended the very first Muster, and my Aunt has performed at the Muster. Just like the talented women before me, at a young age, I developed an interest in music. The Gympie Muster Talent Search seemed like the perfect and most natural first step. I was able to sing on stage with a band and put into action what I’d been practising at home.
In 1996 at only 10 years old, I entered and went on to win the Juvenile section and was given the opportunity to sing on Main Stage after Slim Dusty and Tommy Emmanuel. For a 10-year-old to go from singing at home, to entertaining well over 10,000 people, was an experience that money couldn’t buy. I did don a cowboy hat, tassels and sang a song by the country queen of the moment, Tania Kernaghan. My little knees were knocking and I can still remember the adrenaline of performing. Muster Talent Search gave me that first glimpse into what life could be like if I worked hard enough. I went on to win the Junior Section a few years later, then at 16, I won the overall in the open section.
Winning the Gympie Muster Talent Search was the perfect stepping stone from singing in my community to the big stage. It gave me the opportunity to realise my dreams, set my goals. Entering the competition gives everyone the platform to do the same. This year’s prizes present an incredible opportunity for anyone to use this platform, work hard and dream big.
That’s where it all begins…a dream.”

And the Muster’s passion for nurturing young talent doesn’t stop there. While the Talent Search provides a time to shine for brand new faces, the Emerging Artist Showcase shines a spotlight on those already taking further steps into the industry. Made up of talented local artists and passionate performers to small hometown crowds, on the cusp of breaking through. The showcase provides performers a chance to play in front of a huge Muster crowd, helping to grow their fanbase and skill set.
Muster Program Director Jeff Chandler said,
“While the Muster has a long and proud history of supporting new performers through Talent Search, in recent years additional platforms such as the Emerging Artist Showcase have been introduced to provide a springboard for those acts who may just be a single opportunity away from breaking through to the next level in their careers. A number of artists in this year’s lineup came to attention of the programming team via the Emerging Artist Showcase.”
For those wanting to gain more knowledge about what goes on behind the scenes, The Business of Music: How to thrive in a world beyond CD’s, is a golden opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals about what it takes to make it big. The Gympie Music Muster can now announce the esteemed panellists that patrons will be introduced to, including:

Nick & Tom Wolfe from The Wolfe Brothers, and their manager Steve White from Stephen White Management.
