Praise for DZ DEATHRAYS

ARIA Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album (Bloodstreams, Black Rat)
AIR Best Independent Hard Rock or Punk Album (Bloodstreams, Black Rat, Bloody Lovely
AIR Best Independent Punk Album or EP (Positive Rising: Pt 1)

“More than worth going deaf to” Pitchfork

“Brilliant videos and songs and a great sense of humour and style” Mark Ronson

“tapping back into the colourful, nigh-on hedonistic experimentalism of their early work… while amping up the shred to reach a level of raw, primal punk energy only hinted at on previous efforts. The title stands for ‘Remember It’s For Fun’, and here DZ Deathrays wholeheartedly embody that ethos” NME Australia

“Moody Aussie noisemakers DZ Deathrays bring the concept album back to life. Again…” Kerrang (4/5)

“The world may be a mess, but there’s still fun to be had, and DZ Deathrays deliver it in spades. A tactile and vivacious undertaking that makes you think while lashing you with oscillating punk and more modern textures, R.I.F.F is modern rock cooked to perfection” Hysteria (9/10)

“They speak to my soul. It just feels good listening to their music” MAY-A

“It’s built on the intuitive interplay between Parsons and Ewbank, whose heavily textured playing doesn’t always sound like guitars — more like a twin malevolent force that every so often waxes celestial, like sunlight spearing through storm clouds” The Australian (4/5)

Easing Out Of Control, is a statement of diligence from DZ Deathrays, an outfit who have maintained a sedulous approach to their craft throughout the course of their career – much of which at this point in time counts more years spent together on the road and in the studio, than Shane Parsons, Simon Ridley and Lachlan Ewbank have accumulated outside of their creative paths. Together they consider, what keeps you going when things lose control?

‘Warped’ poses that question, while ‘Ordinary Life’ calls to take stock and enjoy life as it happens. The album’s title track is a layered statement on the world at large and metaphor of DZ’s consistency; elsewhere ‘Demolition’ highlights their enduring riffage, pounding drums and signature jam style –  “every album from us needs those moments.” Those feel-good moments of inhibitionless hedonism abound too in earlier singles asSideways’ and ‘First Night Fever’. DZ Deathrays are still able to not sweat the small stuff just as they allow themselves time to reflect on what’s next.

Speaking to the title track, Shane Parsons continues, “Easing Out Of Control is all about the rise of surveillance and monitoring of people in society. Something that happens bit by bit and slowly it’s out of your control. I’ve actually had versions of this song for about 6 or 7 years now and I’m really glad we finally got the track onto an album. We thought it was a good song to tie together the record to not only describe how the world is feeling but potentially draw a picture of how we are as a band… always just holding it together year after year we exist.”

Reflective of DZ’s everlasting craft, Easing Out Of Control is a letter to the future. Lifting off from their last album R.I.F.F.’s mantra to ‘remember it’s for fun’, DZ Deathrays’ latest is dedicated to taking on the challenges of life and going with the chaos. That sometimes, you need to stare into the distance to have clarity.

Featuring their singular and ever-present jam style, Easing Out Of Control battles existentialism through the comfort of the unknown. With bouts of nostalgia to discussion on autonomy, surveillance and environmentalism, what drives DZ to continue pushing forward is the challenge of enhancing their creative abilities.

Of the album, the band share “Essentially I think we have all found ourselves a bit lost in our career as a band, questioning our relevance but coming to terms with the fact that we just love to do what we do and that’s what drives us to keep going. This whole idea was spurred along by a conversation we were having that at some point in the not too distant future we will have been playing in the band longer than we haven’t, that really hit home and made me realise that the journey we have been on, the songs we have written has shaped us as people.”

Easing Out Of Control was recorded across two sessions, with additional work completed in the band’s home studios. Longtime collaborator Luke Henery (Violent Soho) contributes bass on several tracks. Originally imagined as two separate EPs, the album gradually evolved into a cohesive whole—one that explores new territory without shedding the band’s core identity. There’s still plenty of chaos, but it’s balanced by restraint, texture, and an expanding emotional register.

DZ Deathrays remain one of Australia’s most consistently shape-shifting rock acts. Since their 2012 debut Bloodstreams, the band have sidestepped stagnation with each release—from the riff-driven scale of Positive Rising to the unpredictability of 2023’s R.I.F.F.. Along the way, they’ve shared stages with Foo Fighters, headlined venues like The Tivoli and The Enmore, and carved out a firm place in the national psyche, with multiple entries in triple j’s Hottest 100.

Tonight, the group kick off their national tour in support of Easing Out Of Control’s release, taking to Perth’s Rosemount Hotel and beyond into early February. Known for their sharp, high-impact live shows, the tour will see them translate the album’s expanded sound to stages around the country.
