After a whirlwind year working with Baz Luhrmann on the Elvis film, then solo backpacking to 14 countries in Europe, UK and Northern Africa for four months, award winning singer-songwriter, ELEEA, is back to business with her captivating new single, Just Friends, out 30 June.

Following the relationship arc explored in her previous singles, I’d Beg and Stings – also produced by ARIA chart-topping producer, Brad Hosking (Amy Shark, Casey Barnes) – this bass heavy, drum driven indie-pop track’s vivid lyrics perfectly encapsulate a lesser told break up story.

“When someone’s in your life for a long time, sometimes a breakup isn’t the end of the relationship, but more of a transition. I think these lyrics sum us up: ‘I don’t see us as a failure. We might not have lasted but we’re on the other side’. No huge changes are easy but honestly, he was the perfect ex,” said ELEEA.

Written during a wistful moment in Tasmanian hotel quarantine in the winter of 2020, ELEEA could never have dreamed that one year later, she’d be taking Just Friends to the studio, just as she began an unexpected 12-month contract on Elvis.

“2021 and 2022 were whirlwinds, working full time with Baz, then recording or performing every weekend and releasing two singles. But I felt so lucky to be in the office with insanely passionate, talented people working on a film about a musical legend, it definitely drove me to keep creating.”

“I was tired but inspired when I was able to travel internationally again. The trip really helped me zoom out and return to the stories I want to tell – both my own and those I’ve picked up everywhere from the Sahara to Serbia. Songwriting is incredible therapy and heartbreak is a great muse, but I’ve lived a lot of life since this relationship and its breakdown. Just Friends feels like a nice place to let it rest.”

With an interesting period behind her and 50 new songs written during her recent solo backpacking trips, ELEEA has come home fresh and focused. A semi-permanent wanderer and multi-passionate creative, ELEEA is rounding out 2023 with more travel and tunes as, in the words of Elvis, “You’ve got to follow that dream, wherever that dream may lead.”

Just Friends is out 30 June on all streaming platforms, supported by a launch show at Good Wayz Festival, Brisbane on 30 July.

‘Just Friends’ has been supported by Arts Queensland and the Regional Arts Development Fund.
