Elli Schoen ‘Gold Mess EP’ and video out today; National dates announced
As premiered on triple j’s Home and Hosed, the superb new single and video Gold Mess from Fremantle’s rising star Elli Schoen is officially out today as part of the Gold Mess EP. Produced by Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe, Meg Mac), the track is lush, bold and shameless, a tale of forbidden fruit and suburban stifle. Darker than previously well-received tracks Mumma and Hard Heart, Gold Mess hints at a new, grittier phase for Schoen.
“Gold Mess ties up the end of my suburban themes – breaking from free of small town stuff,” says Schoen. “This feels like the end of a chapter, and the beginning of a new time.” Quartermain adds “We tried to keep it as minimal as possible – If you went into crazy sound trickery land it would almost distract from the fact it’s a really great song with catchy hooks and an intriguing narrative.”
Over the last six months, Schoen has made her mark on Perth’s festival scene, performing on the main stage at Falls Downtown, plus sets at Rottofest, Wave Rock Weekender,
Perth International Music Festival and Nannup Music Festival. She’s also been added to a
string of high-profile supports, playing with everyone from Tash Sultana to
Ronan Keating. “Falls was a game changer for me and my career,” says Schoen. “It made me realise what I want. Playing on the same stage as artists I look up to as influences was incredible.”
With her exquisite melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and powerhouse husky voice, Elli Schoen is one of the most promising young acts to emerge from Fremantle’s rich music scene. Drawing on deeply personal experiences of love, friendship and heartbreak, her beautifully-crafted songs are driven home by arresting vocals – and spliced with hilarious on-stage banter.
Kickstarting her next live run by supporting the legendary Billy Bragg, Elli will then launch Gold Mess with a hometown show and south-west regional dates before embarking over east to hit Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, returning to appear at WAM’s State of the Art Festival. For all the highs achieved throughout last year, 2017 looks to surpass them as Elli Schoen continues on her brilliant creative trajectory.
