Today, Kansas based 17-year-old dynamic singer-songwriter Evann McIntosh (they/them) releases their expansive new project Character Development via Mom+Pop – a pop, R&B, and funk-influenced compilation of the clever and playful lyricism signature to Evann.

According to Evann, “Character Development is one of many phases of my life I’ve been able to encapsulate. If this project had a label on it like a scrapbook would, it’d say ‘SOPHOMORE YEAR OF HIGHSCHOOL 2018-2019’. It’s a character, with a full backstory and all sorts of obstacles. It’s a snow globe forever holding a very specific time and place in my life that has passed and exists only to give context to the next that will do the same for whatever after and so on and so forth. Character Development is a shed layer of skin. A very nice, meaningful shed layer of skin.”

Character Development, attempts to capture the turbulent act of coming-of-age. At times delicate to the touch and at times emanating self-assured confidence well beyond their 17 years of age, Character Development is more than just Evann McIntosh’s transfixing new project; it’s their way of life. The project includes release day track ‘TECTONIC PLATES’, a soulful heartfelt R&B gem-set over a relaxed production. It follows previous singles COCO PEBBLES,” a funk-laden track which earned recognition from Alternative Press, “ELECTRICITY,” a laidback charming alt R&B song about staying close to friends, and “TECTONIC PLATES,” a soulful heartfelt R&B gem-set over a relaxed production.

Written and recorded primarily in the breakout star’s suburban Kansas bedroom, the 13-track collection mixes dark alt-pop and dreamy R&B with streaks of hip-hop, jazz, and funk, calling to mind everything from Prince to Billie Eilish as it grapples with growth and evolution, gender identity and sexuality, freedom and self-expression. The album is a work of pure intimacy, a poignant and revealing portrait of modern adolescence from an artist unraveling the mysteries of their psyche one song at a time.  “This record is all about growth and change,” Evann explains. “I’m always evolving, and this album is the sound of that transformation, of one version of myself giving way to the next.

Character Development follows McIntosh’s acclaimed 2019 debut, MOJO, a digital juggernaut that racked up more than 31 million streams in part due to the viral TikTok success of lead single ‘What Dreams Are Made Of’. Ones To Watch hailed the music’s “self-awareness and vulnerability,” while WWD praised McIntosh’s “maturity and vision,” and Vogue HK declared that they were “ready to conquer the world.” The record also caught the attention of esteemed indie label Mom + Pop, who signed McIntosh over Zoom in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
