Acclaimed English art-rock band Everything Everything have just revealed their intricate seventh album ‘Mountainhead’ – produced by Kaines and Tom AD; the duo of lead guitarist Alex Robertshaw and regular Everything Everything studio engineer Tom Fuller, out via BMG.
‘Mountainhead’ is a sonic delight of intricate hooks folding over one another: vibrant plucky guitar stabs, the moody march of Alex Robertshaw’s orchestration, and reverb-soaked synths, all delivered through a spacious mix with frontman Jonathan Higgs’ vocals at the precipice. The album builds and releases tension skilfully, weaving and snaking into fresh surprises at every turn in a way that feels classically Everything Everything.
Renowned for their visionary fusion of dystopian Black Mirror-style concepts with songs that blur the boundaries of experimentation and art-pop accessibility, the album sees the band continue to hurtle their creative adventures into new realms. ‘Mountainhead’ presents an alternative society fuelled by an almost religious fervour in which those at the lowest rung of the ladder are forced to work relentlessly to keep their elite elevated at the mountain’s peak. While it’s a theory that looks to a nightmarish future, it’s full of engaging metaphors for our current existence, from capitalism and environmentalism to religion and technological detachment.
Higgs explains, “In another world, society has built an immense mountain. To make the mountain bigger, they must make the hole they live in deeper and deeper. All of society is built around the creation of the mountain, and a mountain religion dominates all thought. At the top of the mountain is rumoured to be a huge mirror that reflects endlessly recurring images of the self, and at the bottom of the pit is a giant golden snake that is the primal fear of all believers. A ‘Mountainhead’ is one who believes the mountain must grow no matter the cost and no matter how terrible it is to dwell in the great pit. The taller the mountain, the deeper the hole.”

The album is released alongside a new video for ‘Enter the Mirror’, which extends their previous visual narrative around the record, this time taking in a cult-like funeral ceremony and disconcerting imagery that belies the arena-ready pop sonics of this standout track. Jonathan says, “‘Enter the Mirror’ is a song about friendship in the afterlife. The video was made in the woods in Wales and features puppetry and a magical mirror.”
In support of the record, Everything Everything will return to Australian shores for the first time in six years this May for a co-headline tour with adored English indie-rock act The Vaccines. They’ll perform shows in Boorloo/Perth, Tarntanya/Adelaide, Naarm/Melbourne, Meanjin/Brisbane and Eora/Sydney. The band has previously played Australian mainstays Splendour in the Grass (twice) and Falls Festival, and UK juggernauts Reading and Leeds Festival, T In The Park, Isle of Wight Festival and Parklife Festival.
Lead single ‘Cold Reactor’ was added to rotation on BBC Radio 1 and Double J and garnered a flurry of tastemaker coverage for the band, which included Clash, DIY, DORK, NME, The AU Review and The Line of Best Fit. Throughout their career, the band have received five Ivor Novello Awards nominations and two Mercury Prize nominations, a run of five consecutive Top 10 UK albums, and major headline shows, including London’s Alexandra Palace.
