“The gentle solemnity of someone who has something heavy to say and the knowledge that it must be said.” – Tommy Faith, triple j
“Love the melancholy woven into this, and that reverby rhythm pulsing throughout. It’s a great soundscape as well as a great song. Pulls on the heartstrings.” – Steph Hughes, triple j

Melbourne four-piece Four In The Morning have shared their new single ‘Good Love’, which was co-written with Ainslie Wills, alongside the release of their EP Stress Dreams out today via The Orchard.

Lead singer Kevin says of the single, “Love is one hell of a sharp double-edged sword. You can lie in bed feeling totally safe and happy with your love beside you. Then suddenly, you find yourself spiralling into the worry that you’re not good enough, that they’re wasting their time with you, that somehow you’ll lose them. The more you love, the more there is to fear. This was the conversation Ainslie Wills and I had when we sat down to try some cowriting. I’m not sure how we got onto such heavy topics so quickly, but the song climbed its way out of that conversation fairly easily. In the end the song is about the fear of romantic and familial love — and the compromises we make for both.”
For fans of The National, Phoebe Bridgers, or Gang of Youths, Stress Dreams EP was produced, recorded, and mixed by Jono Steer (Angie McMahon, Ainslie Wills, Leif Vollebekk, Julia Wallace) at The Perch Recording Studio in Castlemaine.
Throughout lockdown they began writing a series of songs that would become the new EP. They worked with Ainslie Wills over Zoom, bounced files back and forth between each other, and had recording dates repeatedly knocked back. Another band may have given up, but Four In The Morning just used the delays and unwanted time to push the songs further; the obstacles informed the music and the chaos helped the songs thrive.
Kevin describes the EP, “I’ve always been shit at sleeping, but I love dreams. During lockdown a friend of mine started asking people to send her the weird “stress dreams” everyone was having. I loved the phrase. It sounds so negative but there’s something beautiful in the subconscious taking all the shit from a day and making sense of it while you sleep. The songs are obsessed with family, longing, stress, depression, love, and how we make sense of all of it. They’re fragments, feelings, and a means of coping. And, for better or worse, they’re very much lockdown songs.”
Led by Irish singer-songwriter Kevin Dolan and surrounded by an eclectic group of genre defying musicians (Kiran Srinivasan, Dan Walwyn and Alex Lees), Four in the Morning write sad songs for insomniacs.
The band are a strange mix of musicians; Kevin is an Irish folk obsessed lyricist, Kiran an Alfa Mist loving funk nut, Alex grew up playing jazz, and Dan — well he might be the glue that holds it all together — he’s a bass player who loves Tool and Paul Simon equally.
Call it alt-folk, indie rock, or anything you like but whatever the genre, Four in the Morning is a fascinating blend of lyrical storytelling and musical experimentation.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
