Following on from the release of his latest single ‘Robots’, Sydney-based artist Friendless has returned with the accompanying video clip, created in partnership with the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and directed by Miranda Middleton.

The clip uses vibrant costume design, make up and choreography to create a visual feast full of colour and energy. Friendless plays the judge character for the robot dance audition, adding “trying to get me to act was pretty interesting. Shot at NIDA’s Kensington campus, lighting is used dynamically to shift the clips tone leading into the third act.

Friendless talks about the concept behind the clip: “We’re in a post-human world, where robots have evolved as a superior breed to mankind. But how do you maintain your individual quirks and personality in a mechanised, monochrome world? It’s audition day for the local dance squad and one colourful character is going to try to win the robot judge over with his unique style and pizzaz”.

As well as being premiered on the ABC’s Rage, ‘Robots’ has also seen extensive support from Spotify, triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi, Radio Metro and Radio Adelaide. Online, the track has seen support from tastemakers Acid Stag and Stoney Roads.

In the live arena, the producer keeps a busy schedule playing sets frequently in Sydney and around Australia and has also supported Pnau, Duke Dumont, Shiba San and Justin Martin.

Music isn’t the only important thing in his life though, as the artist also involves himself in the community through charity work with organisations such as Heaps Decent, who work with kids in Juvenile Justice Centres. Friendless mentions of the work;

“It was something I was passionate about as these kids were only ‘criminals’ due to generational poverty and undiagnosed mental health issues in families that usually manifested itself in addiction issues and violence”.
