(Tuesday 29 July) One of Australia’s most innovative contemporary artists, multi-ARIA award-winning visionary, Genesis Owusu, will return to Australian stages for two Eora/Sydney and Naarm/Melbourne live residencies this September – supported by experimental hip hop trio Shady Nasty on all dates.

Across the intimate showcases, Owusu and his live four-piece band will play a rare in-the-round configuration, previewing never-before-heard material from his forthcoming unannounced album. A glimpse into a bold new sonic universe, sprinkled among re-imaginations of favourites from his genre-defying catalogue – “Redstar Wu’s Neighbourhood Jams” is anchored in a celebration of community, evolution, and return to live instrumentation.

The series will first take over Sydney Opera House’s Studio on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 September before heading to Naarm’s The Night Cat on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 September.

“I’ve been missing seeing you guys. My community! I wanna chat, I wanna play some music, I want to see how you’re all doing. Touch some grass n that. Sometimes the more people there are, the more anonymous we can become, so let’s keep it intimate for now. Small capacity, few nights in a row, residency style. Me, you and my band. Give you a first experience of this new album! We’re gonna call these little shows ‘Redstar Wu’s Neighbourhood Jams.’ See ya there x” Genesis Owusu

Owusu’s resolute 2021 debut, Smiling With No Teeth, was a cultural reset, a fearless exploration of identity, experimenting with funk, punk and rap that earned acclaim from The GuardianRolling StoneNME and Anthony Fantano’s Needle Drop. In 2023, Owusu reinterpreted his debut with a landmark, sold-out orchestral performance at Sydney Opera House, before releasing his sophomore album STRUGGLER. The record debuted at #4 on the ARIA Album Chart, and was praised by PasteNPR, Billboard and Alternative Press. The two masterful collections secured a combined 7x ARIA Awards – including two Album of the Year titles – while come 2024, acclaimed standalone singles “Good Times” and “WUTD” also earned their stripes with two gold plaques in Australia. Capping off the year headlining Vivid Sydney with immersive, sold-out shows – Owusu firmly cemented his status as one of Australia’s most visionary live performers.

Having shared stages with Tame Impala, Paramore, IDLES and Bloc Party to name a few, plus appeared at some of the world’s most iconic festivals and venues, including Lollapalooza, Primavera Sound, Austin City Limits, Mad Cool and Boston Calling, Owusu’s international impact only continues to strengthen. Between US and European headline runs, he has dominated the Australian festival scene playing some of the biggest stages at Splendour in the Grass, Meredith Music Festival, Field Day, Groovin The Moo, Spilt Milk and Harvest Rock, as well as national headline runs and sold-out performances at Sydney Opera House’s Concert Hall with Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

As the enduring anti-hero of the global alternative music scene, Genesis Owusu today continues to re-design his output and re-draw the lines of performance, art and being an artist today. Don’t miss these limited capacity experiences this September – ticket info below.

GENESIS at the SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

One of Australia’s most innovative contemporary artists, multi-ARIA award-winning visionary, Genesis Owusu, will return to the Sydney Opera House for a two-night Studio residency this September with support from left-field classically trained punk outfit, Shady Nasty. Owusu and his four-piece band will play a rare in-the-round configuration to preview never-before-heard material from his highly anticipated new album.

The boundary-pushing renegade last played the Opera House with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2023 as well as popping up as Jonti’s surprise guest at Vivid LIVE 2024. He will perform Redstar Wu’s Neighbourhood Jams – an explosive all-new show playing tracks from his next chapter, as well as a captivating reimagination of his acclaimed genre-defying catalogue that has earned him a worldwide following.

We’re gonna call these little shows “Redstar Wu’s Neighbourhood Jams.” See ya there x”, Genesis Owusu.

Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music, Ben Marshall said: “Since bursting onto the scene with his searing, generation-defining debut, this genre-bending international phenomenon has been blowing the roofs (and floors) off venues around the world. We are beyond excited to set the scene for Genesis Owusu’s next creative odyssey and for our audiences to be among the first to hear this new music when he returns to the Opera House with this exhilarating up-close-and-personal experience.”
