Following an illustrious career as one quarter of ARIA Award-winning folk band All Our Exes Live In Texas, Eora/Sydney based musician, songwriter, singer and presenter GEORGIA MOONEY today shares her highly anticipated debut solo single ‘War Romance’, accompanied by its video featuring internationally renowned comedian Rhys Nicholson making their drag debut. As expansively cinematic as the artist herself, ‘War Romance’ sees Georgia Mooney muse on finding a lover to spend the end of the world with. The first cut from her to-be-announced debut solo album, ‘War Romance’ is out now globally through Nettwerk, stream HERE.
‘War Romance’ reads like a modern day romantic tragedy, born from the relentless waves of global tribulations – political unrest, the pandemic, and especially the climate crisis. As life moves beyond our control and the world seems to be slipping beyond the bounds of repair, she clings to the clarity and desperation of love as she searches for someone to see out the catastrophe with. Co-produced with Noah Georgeson (Cate Le Bon, Devendra Banhart, Marlon Williams, Joanna Newsom) the feelings of longing are made palpable in ‘War Romance’ – ornate and hand-crafted, sculpted by a strong mind and a delicate heart, this story of longing and resilience is carried by Mooney’s soaring angelic voice over maximalist, cinematic soundscapes. Layers of piano, strings, synths, guitar and percussion evoke the unsettling genius of Kate Bush – both her idiosyncratic wall of sound instrumentation and unexpected turns of chords and melodies.
On the single, Georgia Mooney shares, “I have always loved wartime films & novels for the way they portray relationships. When life is fragile and we are faced with our mortality on a daily basis, we cling to one another for comfort. Superficial problems fall away and the bonds of love feel extraordinarily strong and vital. It’s a bit melodramatic, but romantic and earnest too. Like standing on a cliff, clutching a letter, staring out to sea.”

The ‘War Romance’ music video stars award-winning comedian and guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under Rhys Nicholson (they/them) making their drag debut as Georgia Mooney, and Mooney herself as Nicholson. Romantic and fantastical, the clip sees them move and sing around a beautiful old hotel in a time and place that is impossible to define.
Georgia Mooney shares on the video, “Rhys is one of my closest friends and a praiseworthy performer of the distinguished lip-sync! By performing as each other, the video has a campness that matches the melodrama of the music. It lightens the heaviness of the lyrical sentiment and places us in a lush and timeless dreamscape that seeks only beauty. It was a truly wonderful day of filming where we both discovered the joy and liberation of drag. There was much giggling. But perhaps unsurprisingly, we quickly discovered that the most difficult scene to do was the one where we were playing ourselves.”
First finding fame as one quarter of acclaimed folk band All Our Exes Live in Texas, Georgia Mooney (she/her) is an ARIA-winning singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Eora/Sydney. She co-hosts the Simply Marvellous podcast with Rhys Nicholson and Kyran Wheatley and is also the creator of SUPERGROUP, a wonderfully entertaining musical variety show that brings together an eclectic mix of musicians to perform each other’s songs and tell weird and wonderful stories. The much beloved show toured in 2022 after several years in residency in Eora/Sydney, with guests including Tim Minchin, Hannah Joy (Middle Kids), Sam Cromack (Ball Park Music), Clare Bowditch, Montaigne, Maple Glider, Elizabeth, Tim Rogers and Murray Cook (The Wiggles). As deft and charismatic a speaker as a musician, Mooney has hosted the APRA Awards, frequently guest hosted on Double J, and contributed angelic harmony vocals to the likes of Passenger, Tim Minchin, Kesha and many more. Together with All Our Exes Live In Texas, she has toured the world several times over, including as special guests of the iconic Midnight Oil, Backstreet Boys, Nathaniel Ratelif and a host of others.
Georgia Mooney’s debut solo album will be released in 2023 via Nettwerk.
