Live music’s post-COVID re-birth continued on Saturday December 5 as Qudos Bank Arena hosted 6,000 spellbound fans who watched Bernard Fanning & Matt Corby co-headline the closing show of the Greatest Southern Nights series, the first arena concerts since March 2020.

The concert proved that live music is back at scale in New South Wales with more than 12,000 fans coming through Qudos Bank Arena’s doors over two weekends, including the first show, headlined by Ocean Alley, on Saturday 28 November.

Geoff Jones, Chief Executive of TEG, said: “These reduced capacity shows were a vital stepping stone in getting venues back to 100 per cent capacity as soon as practicable in order to deliver even bigger shows to artists and fans and to get our people back in full-time employment.

“Our thanks to all of the artists for their wonderful performances and to the NSW Government and Destination NSW for their crucial support in making the shows happen and showing Sydney and Australia leading the world.”

The Greatest Southern Nights were an unprecedented collaboration between TEG Live and Live Nation which promoted the shows with generous support from the NSW Government and Destination NSW.

Each historic concert welcomed more than 6,000 live music fans to enjoy a fully seated, socially-distanced and COVID Safe experience. The events created employment and generated much-needed income for the live entertainment industry while delivering a celebratory experience for fans and an important test case for staging large indoor events.

The Greatest Southern Nights shows have been vitally important to kickstart large, arena-level events in a COVID-safe and controlled manner.

They are a small step towards getting the live industry back to the full capacity it needs to be able to operate and support the same number of jobs it did before the pandemic struck.
