GUM aka Jay Watson today shares Out In The World via Spinning Top Records | Caroline Australia. The timeless new single from the Tame Impala and POND multi-instrumentalist is avail able digitally and on a limited edition 7” vinyl paired with a cover of It’s A Sad World by Ballroom.
Performed, produced and mixed by Watson, the darkly toned pop song glimmers with rich textures and features a sax cameo by Christian Ruggiero.
“Out In the World is about wanting to give up and never talk to anyone ever again after something goes wrong. Some people have that feeling all the time – it’s crippling and isolating,” says Watson of the single. “It sounds like light coming through half-shut blinds. It’s not possible for all, but for me, I force myself to go out again, or get on stage, or do whatever it is I have to do to keep moving on,” he adds.
Shot by Canadian filmmaker Laura-Lynn Patrick, the visual accompaniment for Out In The World captures Watson in solitude in dreamy panoramic scenes.
The accompanying 7” B side features a faithful cover of It’s A Sad World from Ballroom, originally released in 1966. Watson discovered the track on YouTube some years ago and has been enamoured by its futuristic sound since.
“It reminded me of Portishead, the production is amazing. I like recording covers every now and then to break up recording your own songs. It’s nice to not have to worry about the songwriting and just record something for the sake of it,’ he shares.
GUM has performed as special guest for Mac DeMarco, Mini Mansions and Angel Olsen, in addition to sold-out shows in Australia and packed rooms across Europe, the UK and USA. The new single follows his fourth studio album The Underdog LP released in 2018 and featured lead singles The Blue Marble and Couldn’t See Past My Ego. The album received rave reviews and lured a new legion of GUM fanatics and firmly established Watson’s distinctive sound.

AMNPLIFY – DB
My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
