Australian indie artist Hein Cooper returns with his fourth studio album, My Own—a raw, self-produced body of work recorded entirely in his mother’s garage. A bold step into creative independence, the album marks a pivotal chapter in Cooper’s evolution—both as an artist and as a human navigating transformation, resilience, and self-reflection.

Today he reveals new single ‘Rock’ – a standout moment featuring the raw, electric energy of blues legend Ash Grunwald. “Rock explores my issues with pride, selfishness and an unwillingness to understand my partner”, comments Hein. “I felt like the metaphor of a rock, hard to move or alter, reflected my state for years. It’s a promise and acceptance to commit to get things right through the slow process of change.”

My Own delves into universal themes of self-reflection, transformation, and hope. From the optimistic beginnings of the album to the raw self-awareness in tracks like ‘Worst Enemy,’ Hein confronts his own struggles and the impact they’ve had on his relationships and life. Standout singles include ‘Avalon’ featuring indigenous rapper The Boy Of Many Colors – a reflective critique of societal chaos, ‘Submarine’ – embracing the flow and trusting the unseen forces shaping the journey, ‘Butterfly’ – the heartfelt acknowledgment of the need for change, ‘Wallflower’ – a tender thank-you to his wife for her unwavering support and belief in his potential and ‘Sweet as the Sun’ –  a resolution to lead with love and embrace life’s possibilities.

The album draws sonic inspiration from artists like Bon Iver, Ben Howard, and Nick Mulvey, featuring rich textures and contributions from musicians including Kasey Chambers’ drummer Syd Green and blues artist Ash Grunwald.

Known for his emotive songwriting and ethereal folk sound, Cooper first captured attention with his debut album produced by Marcus Paquin (The National, Arcade Fire), which earned high rotation on triple j and international tour slots alongside James Bay and Lukas Graham.

Hein’s journey has been anything but linear. From pub gigs on the South Coast of NSW to global tours and personal reckonings, My Own is the result of six months spent writing, recording, and producing one song at a time—responding to life as it unfolded. Tracks were released monthly throughout 2024, documenting real-time growth and catharsis. “I called the record My Own because it really is me—I wrote it, recorded it, and produced all of my deepest thoughts and feelings,” he says.

While the music is deeply introspective, Cooper’s journey is universal—grappling with self-doubt, rediscovering purpose, and stepping into authenticity. My Own is a quiet triumph of ownership and artistic freedom. From humble beginnings and a $100 guitar to a life of sold-out tours and inner reinvention, Hein Cooper invites listeners into his most intimate work yet.

Hein embarked on a national co-headline tour with Gaudion, kicking off with a hometown show in Sydney last Friday May 23 at The Loft on Broadway. Tickets available via heincooper.com
