Today, ARIA award-winning duo Hermitude release their seventh studio album Mirror Mountain, out now via Elefant Traks.
Recorded in a Blackheath home studio, after multiple writing trips across New Zealand and Japan before the COVID-19 pandemic era, Mirror Mountain is El Gusto and Dubs’ “love letter to our hometown” in the Blue Mountains, country of the Dharug and Gundungurra peoples. Featuring guest appearances from The Jungle Giants, and fellow Blue Mountains native Andie, Mirror Mountain is an exquisite addition to one of the most revered catalogs in Australian electronic music.

“We wrote this last year in Gusto’s house, so it has a really personal feel to us”, they say, in turn becoming a homage to their local community and the regrowth it inspired within the Hermitude project. Driven by the serene and silent surroundings, their seventh full length release sees Hermitude return to their roots in more ways than one, taking a deep dive into their core musical DNA while giving back to the fans who have been there from the very beginning. Across the record, crunchy break-beats and fuzzy analogue synths are met with masterful, forward-thinking production; Hermitude blending dance music’s past and future into sonic cohesion. The pair opted for a pared-back setup of one synth, one laptop and a Moog Matriarch, attempting “not to over-clutter the music,” they explained. “Recording Pollyanarchy was a fun experience, but it was also tiring,” said Angus. “We wanted to strip everything back and return to the essence of why we started Hermitude in the first place,” Luke added. “Which was just us two locked in a studio in the mountains having a bit of fun and seeing what came out.” The limited equipment gave the duo an opportunity to let their imagination run wild, leaning back into the essence of the Hermitude project.
Lead single “St Claire” sets the scene with a flurry of modular synths and an ecstatic drop serving the first of Mirror Mountain’s many larger-than-life moments. Both delicate and foreboding, the track’s dense textures are reminiscent of the mountainous seascapes that inspired the record’s early writing sessions. “Lift Me Up” continues this high with an uplifting synth melody and snappy drum groove that evokes hands-in-the-air dance euphoria. Following on, “Promises” explodes with a cacophonous breakbeat and bouncy saw-synths, before an earworm vocal hook from Andie punctuates the chorus.

Next up, recent single “When You Feel Like This” sees the duo team up with Australian indie-rock royalty The Jungle Giants, to deliver a slick two-step dance-pop hit. The distinctive falsetto of frontman Sam Hales pairs perfectly with the modulated synths and crisp percussion that have come to define Hermitude’s sound over the years. “Golden Hour” introduces the album’s more introspective second half, with a shuffling dance beat and melancholic piano melody underpinning the track. The hazy reggaeton groove of “Flush With Love” continues this motif as soft keys and plucked acoustic guitars are paired with playful electronic textures. The record shifts gears with a plaintive synth interlude on “Tides Of Time”, before closing out with a slew of buzzing synths on atmospheric trap number “Sixth Sense”, a modern take on old-school instrumental hip-hop.
Mirror Mountain comes ahead of Hermitude’s forthcoming east-coast tour, comprising spectacular live shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne this June. Hermitude will kick off the Mirror Mountain tour with a headline appearance as part of Sydney’s VIVID LIVE 2022 program. Followed by shows in Brisbane and Melbourne, the East Coast tour will see Hermitude bring to life tracks from their new album, alongside beloved fan-favourites lifted from their award-winning discography. Having toured the world at their own sold-out headline shows, and at some of the biggest festivals, including Splendour in the Grass, Groovin The Moo, Falls Festival, Field Day, Spilt Milk, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Lollapalooza, The Governors Ball and more, Hermitude’s return to the live stage is hugely anticipated for fans worldwide in 2022.
To further celebrate the record, running for 72 hours from May 13, Roblox will be spotlighting Mirror Mountain with an in-game listening party, in line with a very special ‘Live from Mirror Mountain’ performance by Hermitude filmed at a secret location in Wentworth Falls, to premiere on Beatport’s YouTube channel on May 13.
Award-winning multi-instrumentalists Luke Dubs and El Gusto have moved from strength to strength as Hermitude, since meeting in their early teens. First signing to Elefant Traks in 2002, the pair have marked out a sonic footprint that is defined by their hip-hop roots and electronic soundscapes. Their 2012 album, Hyperparadise would see its title track reach #38 on the ARIA Charts and its Flume remix hit speakers everywhere, while their single “Speak of the Devil” would win a J Award for Music Video of the Year. Their follow-up album, Dark Night Sweet Light debuted at #1 on the ARIA Charts, with singles “The Buzz” featuring Mataya and Young Tapz firmly placing them on the world map. Their latest album, Pollyanarchy again reflected their development as one of the country’s best duos, adored by triple j and press nationally. Most recently, “Hyperparadise” received a Tropkillaz remix, and its previous flip from Flume and GANZ was featured on EA Sports’ FIFA 2022 soundtrack.
Steeped in introspection and thought-provoking sonic stories, Mirror Mountain is the most quietly powerful release yet from one of Australian dance music’s most accomplished and celebrated groups. Don’t miss catching Hermitude and their newest collection live this June.

My nickname is “The Amnplifier”. Why? Because around here my focus is on being a conduit for providing greater outcomes that people come here for. My day to day “work” is living in the moment, and I love helping others concentrate on finding their connection to themselves through their experiences.
Why start a music environment? The truth is I love music, I love writing, and I love life. I work with musicians every day, and I feel certain that I will be until they put me in the ground. I have been managing people in businesses of some sort for over thirty five years so along the way I have developed some “wisdom” from my regular and constant “observations”.
Amnplify your experience. That is what we want you to do here, and if you want to let me know why you do, or don’t, shoot me a message on Facebook.
Hope you enjoy yourself here and find something that hits you somewhere.
