Highasakite embark sprawling, hallucinatory horizons with new single ‘Elastic State Of Mind’ – out now via Propeller Recordings / Caroline Australia, and partnered with news of the band’s first live shows in almost a year.

Live dates commence in November with fans in London and Stockholm afforded the first shows since Highasakite’s ‘Camp Echo’ Album Tour of 2016/17, which comprised main stage headlines at Norway’s five biggest festivals; Glastonbury, Latitude (UK), Hurricane (DE), Roskilde (DK) and Field Day (AUS); and sold out venues spanning the UK, US and locally in Australia with appearances at Beyond The Valley and Field Day.

Added to New Music Friday on Spotify Australia, ‘Elastic State Of Mind’ showcases the soaring signature melodies of vocalist, composer and writer Ingrid Helene Håvik, with drummer Trond Bersu also stepping into the role of producer. The track takes an arguably more ‘pop’ approach to previous single ‘Out Of Order’ – Norwegian Top 40 Official Singles Chart (NO), Top 30 Spotify Chart (NO) – with an intuitive immediacy that was especially evident in the studio.

“Usually, Ingrid brings her ideas to the studio fully formed,” Bersu explains, “but this time, she just improvised the chorus on the spot. I remember the other elements had been kicking around for a while, but the melody in the chorus came from nowhere, and just felt right.”

Lyrically speaking, the song isn’t so far removed from the “sideways” state of being explored on ‘Out Of Order’ – “An elastic state of mind / I don’t know if I’m hallucinating” – but it made sense to have fun with it this time. “I think we could have very easily taken it in a more melancholy direction,” Håvik says, “but it felt good to make it into something you could dance to”.

New music joins Highasakite’s breakthrough LP ‘Silent Treatment’ (2014) – which broke the record for longest consecutive run in Norwegian chart history with more than two years in the Top 40 – and #1 Charting successor ‘Camp Echo’ (2016). The band’s collective catalogue tallies more than 100 million streams, with Håvik’s alternative approach to pop writing earning multiple Norwegian Grammy Awards and widespread acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, NME, MOJO, The Guardian and Vogue
