Known for his distinct fusion of dark RnB pop fused with slick neo-hip-hop sensibilities, Sydney-based artist and producer hunter 505 is unveiling his highly-anticipated EP ‘mood’, out NOW.
Showing off his songwriting capabilities alongside his obvious affinity for performing and production, hunter 505 has been serving up the tunes since his 2018 debut, significantly propelling his sonic evolution forwards this year with assertive genre defiance and self-examining emotional epiphanies.
Offering up a five-track sonic journey highlighting the emotional struggle within, ‘mood’ moves fluidly from the self-contemplating bravado of ‘ego’, the stormy, internal mental battle found in ‘handle’ and ‘before i die’, drifting towards ‘heart attack’ that explores accepting loving someone else and eventually finding peace in the baptism of ‘natural’ by exploring how to love yourself.
Setting the tone for the EP is opener ‘ego’, a high-energy hype track boasting a surge of spiking synths, quick-footed electric drum patterns and hunter 505’s confident rap style, building up to the ecstatic release of sheer fanfaronade, until pivoting from experiencing the ego to examining it with an addictive repeating lyrical hook representing inward reflection.
Next, lead single ‘handle’ blows in like a storm, anchored by a mesmeric kick drum beat and bass combo as the track swells with high-end whistles that land with the refreshing sting of sea spray, acting as an expression of the constant ebbing and flowing from one feeling to the next while remaining unable to move forward.
Entering with a post-punk air of angst-filled guitar riffs, desperate vocals and an unrelenting drumbeat comes ‘before i die’, a twisted self-serving serenade languishing in the throes of depression, featuring bassy synths and heavy rock energy to express the particular experience of those difficult weighted feelings.
‘heart attack’ rolls in next, immediately serving up a steamy chorus of heart skipping electric guitar riffs and hunter 505’s self-assured vocals, joined by eerie vocal harmonies that emphasise the fluid melody and capture the heart-stopping feeling of first love.
Closing the EP in a baptism of self-acceptance is ‘natural’, a no-filter expression of hunter 505’s feelings over the past year, drenched with gospel-inspired organ chords, addictive trap beats and deep, vibrating bass lines as liquid production sees the artist cleanse himself of his previous self-inflicted woes and follow the direction of his new compass.
