Phoenix-based collective Injury Reserve have started the year with a bang; dropping ‘Jawbreaker’ in January and now hitting back with new single ‘Jailbreak The Tesla (feat. Aminé)’ – out now via Loma Vista / Caroline Australia.
The partnering video – directed by group member/producer Parker Corey – features friend and collaborator Aminé, alongside fisheye frames and quick cut cinematography. It’s not the first time Injury Reserve and Aminé have teamed up, having also released ‘Campfire‘ together last year.
Fresh from a huge SXSW show, Injury Reserve will be bringing their unique sound with their trademark energy to our antipodean shores. The trio’s first ever Australia and New Zealand tour will kick off in Christchurch on Thursday, June 6 before landing in Sydneyon Tuesday, June 11 – full dates below…
It’s a long way from the Phoenix dental office where Injury Reserve recorded their debut mixtape (aptly titled Live from the Dentist Office). From playing house shows to being played on Beats 1 Radio, the trio has ascended from the US ‘burbs to an international stage; also landing a playlist add from Australia’s own triple j and debuting in Shazam’s Top 100 Chart. How did it all happen? What makes producer Parker Corey and rappers Stepa J. Groggs and Ritchie With a T special?
For Complex, it’s their boundary-pushing, “DIY weirdness.” For Billboard, their fashion sense and fearless honesty. Pigeons and Planes admires their group dynamic, calling them “one of the best new groups in hip-hop,” while Mass Appeal nods to their cinematic vision. Anthony Fantano’s interest in their ability to balance tradition with innovation is well-documented on the Needle Drop, where he published 8/10 reviews of Live from the Dentist Office and last year’s Floss. The latter – a major breakthrough for the group with features from Cakes da Killa and Vic Mensa – is energetic, refined, and in Christgau’s words, “the most unpretentious hip-hop you ever heard”.
